Historical Description

FINGHALL, or Fingall, is a township, parish and small village on a lofty eminence, with a station called Finghall Lane on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, half a mile north from the village, and is 5 miles east from Leyburn, in the Richmond division of the Riding, petty sessional division and wapentake of West Hang, union and county court district of Leyburn, rural deanery of Catterick West, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Andrew, situated half a mile below the village, near a small rivulet, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, southwest porch and a central turret containing 2 bells: there is a gallery at the west end and a marble tablet to the Rev. Christopher Wyvill and his daughter Henrietta, dated March 8, 1822, and in 1894 a mural tablet was placed by Mrs. Bay, of Spennithorne, to the Rev. George Henry Ray B.A. rector 1869—93: the east window was filled with stained glass in 1890 in memory of Fitz Henry J. C. Bay, d. 1888: the church was restored in 1904 at a cost of £1,150, and affords 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1600 and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £330, including 84 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Marmaduke D’arcy Wyvill esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. Henry Milner sharpies B.A. of Durham University. There is a Wesleyan chapel here, erected in 1910. The land is principally the property of Hector Christie esq. of Jervaulx Abbey, who is lord of the manor. The soil is loamy; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area of the township is 561 acres; rateable value, £802; the population in 1911 was 81 in the township, and 317 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary school, Constable Burton (mixed), was erected in 1839, for 60 children; average attendance, 45; John Dalby, master; it is used as a chapel of ease on Sunday evenings.
