Historical Description
FISHLAKE is a village, township and parish on the north bank of the Don, 2 miles from Stainforth station on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, 8 ½ miles north-east from Doncaster, in the southern division of the Riding, south division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, union and county court district of Thorne, rural deanery of Snaith. and diocese and archdeaconry of York. The church of St. Cuthbert is a stone building, consisting of chancel with two chantry chapels, nave and aisles, a Perpendicular tower and 6 bells: the piers and arches are Transitional, but the body of the church is Perpendicular: on the south side of the nave is a magnificent porch, undoubtedly a remnant of the original church of the Warrens; four circular arches spring from as many cylindrical columns with richly ornamented capitals; each circle is finely carved, but the outer arch is the most remarkable, being divided into twelve compartments, each presenting a different subject: it has a fine Norman porch and a beautiful font dating from 1370: in the chancel is a singular altar tomb to Richard Marshall, a former vicar, embellished with carvings of a Tau cross, death’s head, hands folding a chalice, keys and numerous others which age has all but obliterated; the top of the tomb once had brasses, now gone; Dodswortli, the antiquarian, however, fortunately copied the inscription, which is very quaint:—
“Here lyeth Richard Marshall, whom in his liking age
God lyst called to his mercy and grace,
The vicar of this church of good fame without rage,
In whose time this chancell and vestry bildite was.
The yere of our Lord, 1505, death did him embrace
Whose body the second day of February was laid in this place.
Almighty God of thine infinite pete,
Of Richard Marshall have mercy and let him everlastingly enjoy thy deity.”
There is also preserved here an ancient fifteenth century alms dish of repousse work, representing the Annunciation. The register dates from the year 1561, and is in good condition: among the entries of burials is found that of “Bernardus Allerdin, a Belgian, of the city of Gwinnig, formerly serjeant under the Prince of Orange, lately serving under John Lambert, general of the horse of the Commonwealth of England, laid down his arms, and was honoured with a funeral service and military pomp, in the chancel of the church of Fishlake, in the diocese or York, being buried on Friday, the twenty-sixth of April, 1652.” The living is a vicarage, yearly value £460, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham and held by the Rev. George Ornsby M.A. of University College, Durham and Canon of York. The charities amount to about £65 annually, besides the poor’s estate of 10a.3r. 28p. which produce £27 yearly, for distribution in fuel and money. The Wesleyans (New Connexion) and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here. The Hon. Mrs. Meynell Ingram, who is lady of the manor, and Lord Houghton are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil the same. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans. The area of the township is 3,668 acres, of which 31 are water: rateable value, £4,887; and the population in 1671, 615.
The Endowed school has an income of £60 yearly, arising from land.
