Historical Description

Flamborough is a very ancient town, and was formerly of some note; at present it is only a large fishing village. It stands in a hollow nearly in the centre of the promontory, five miles from Bridlington, and nearly at the same distance from the Quay. The population, about seven or eight hundred, is about half made up of fishermen and their families; the other inhabitants consist of farmers’ labourers, and the necessary mechanics that are met with in all country villages. In 1794 twenty of the fishermen perished in a storm at sea, and there was scarcely a family in Flamborough that had not to lament the loss of a relative. The Flamborough fishermen chiefly confine themselves to their own coast, and seldom send more than four boats to the herring fishery at Yarmouth. The new light-house is erected at the distance of nearly a mile and a half to the eastward of the town. The light is a revolving light, with three faces of seven reflectors each.

Flamborough Head is certainly a magnificent object, and one of the greatest curiosities the kingdom can boast. The promontory on which it stands forms a range of six miles, and is in some places nearly 300 feet high. At the bottom of these limestone rocks are a number of caverns, as the Dove-Cote, so called from being the usual breeding place of rock pigeons; the Kirk-Hole, of considerable extent, and Robin Lyth’s Hole. The latter has two openings, one communicating with the land, the other with the sea. The former is low and narrow; but the darkness at the entrance gradually disperses, and exhibits the floor like a solid rock formed into broad steps of an easy descent; and the stones at the sides are curiously variegated. The roof is finely arched, and nearly fifty feet high at the centre. The many projecting ledges and fragments of suspended rocks, give it a grand and rather an awful appearance. On approaching the eastern extremity a noble vista is formed by its opening to the sea.

In summer time these rocks are the rendezvous of myriads of aquatic fowls, and they breed in these inaccessible retreats, generally speaking, free from danger: but at the report of a gun these feathered inhabitants are instantly in motion; and the eye is almost dazzled with the waving of innumerable wings brightened by the rays of the sun, whilst the ear is stunned with the clamour of a thousand discordant notes.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

FLAMBOROUGH is a civil parish and large fishing village, 2 miles east from Flamborough station on the Scarborough, Bridlington and Hull section of the North Eastern railway and 4 east-north-east from Bridlington and 207 from London, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Dickering, union and county court district of Bridlington, rural deanery of Bridlington, archdeaconry of the East Biding and diocese of York. The parish comprises the extreme point of the lofty promontory called Flamborough Head, one of the most striking features on the eastern coast; it forms the termination seaward of the ridge of chalk called the Yorkshire Wolds and projects into the sea for a distance of 2 or 3 miles. The cliffs stretch along in a continuous range from Bridlington Quay, a distance of more than 5 miles, rising in many places to the height of from 300 to 400 feet perpendicularly above the sea and having at their base many extensive caverns; in some places portions of the chalk, which, severed from the main shore, have resisted the lapse of time and the violence of the ocean, rear their solitary masses in conical forms, and two of these isolated portions have been respectively named the “King ’s and “Queen” rocks. The most attractive of the cliff caverns is one known as “Robin Lythe's Hole,” situated under a considerable projection of rock, near the north landing-place: the general entrance is from the land side, and is at first low and narrow, but speedily widens, and the path, from being rugged and dark, becomes smoother and less gloomy; advancing, another opening shows itself, and the white spray fringing the base of the rock has a fine effect; viewed from this point, with the back towards the sea, the interior appears as a finely-arched dome, rising in the centre to an altitude of about 50 feet and on the sides are many projecting ledges of rock; the floor has the appearance of a regular flight of steps: the “Smugglers’ Cave,” on the north side of the headland, can only be entered by boat. During the early summer months a great number of sea-fowl and other kinds of birds resort to the cliffs, and deposit their eggs on the ledges of the rock without any nest. The lighthouse, built in 1806, about 400 yards from the extreme point of the promontory, is a round structure of brick about 85 feet in height, and in 1873 was fitted with a dioptric revolving lens showing a light 115,750 candle-power every 45 seconds, one red to two white; the old lighthouse, an octagonal tower, is situated a short distance from the new one. Near the lighthouse is a fog signal station, from which a syren gives two powerful blasts every 2 ½ minutes during foggy weather. On the south side of Flamborough Head, extending northward for about a mile, and continued almost uninterruptedly, across the headland, is a deep and now picturesque earthwork, called “Danes’ Dyke.” Flamborough has long been noted as a fishing station; many kinds of fish are taken here and are disposed of by public auction; a steam engine has been placed at the north landing for the purpose of hauling the fishing cobles on to the beach. The church of St. Oswald is an ancient edifice of stone, supposed to have been originally built in the middle of the 11th century, and consists of chancel with aisles, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower containing 4 bells and a clock, erected in 1898 at a cost of £1,750: the chancel is separated from the nave by a wooden screen of the 15th century, richly carved and originally painted and gilt; over it are the remains of the ancient rood-loft: the brass eagle lectern, presented 2 Aug. 1892, is a memorial to John Bertram Ogle B.A. solicitor, and son of William Ogle M.D. of Derby, who died 14 Feb. 1892; and there is also a monument to Rev. J. F. Ogle, a former vicar: on the north side of the altar is a brass with inscription to Sir Marmaduke Constable kt. who, when 70 years of age, commanded the third division of the English forces at the Battle of Flodden Field (Sept. 9, 1513); he died in 1530, aged 87; at the east end of the south aisle is a mural monument to Walter Strickland, ob. 1671, and in the chancel are two brasses inscribed to Walter Strickland, of Flamborough, d. 26 Oct. 1839, and Frances, his wife, d. 24 April. 1836, and two others to Catherine, widow of Walter Strickland, of Cokethorpe, Oxon, d. 29 Jan. 1892, and to Frances Elizabeth, widow of Charles Cottrell-Dormer esq. of Rousham, Oxon, d. 20 Oct. 1892: the stained east window was inserted by Mrs. W. Strickland, of Cokethorpe Park, Oxon, in memory of her husband, Walter Strickland esq. who died in 1870; and there is another, placed in April, 1908, to C. A. Cottrell-Dormer esq. who died in Nov. 1906: the organ was erected in Aug. 1871, at a cost of nearly £300: the church was restored in 1868, and in 1892 a south porch was built as a memorial to the late Walter Strickland esq. and Catherine, his wife, and dedicated by the Bishop of Beverley, 14 Dec. 1892: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 44 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of J. H. Upton esq. of Ingmire Hall, Sedbergh, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Henry William Rigby M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford, There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Charities:-Sir Thomas Strickland’s amounts to £32 9s. a year and Mr. C. H. Childers’ to £25 yearly: there is also Gibbon’s dole of £1, and Walmsley’s dole of 24s. yearly. The Victoria Institute and Reading Room was erected in 1887. Flamborough was the birth place, about 1544, of Sir John Puckering kt. Speaker of the House of Commons in the parliament of 1585, and lord keeper of the Great Seal of England in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, from May 28, 1592; he died April 30, 1596, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Here are some remains of a tower or castle, apparently of Norman date, though tradition asserts that it was erected by the Danes. The principal landowners are John H. Upton esq. who holds the manorial rights and is lay impropriator, the Rev. H. L. Ogle M.A. of Malton, the Rev. P. H. D. Ogle M.A. of Nottingham, the Misses Whytehead and the trustees of J. Walmsley esq. The soil is strong clay; subsoil, chalk and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats and turnips. The area is 3,076 acres of land, 5 of water and 250 of foreshore; rateable value, £5,100; the population in 1911 was 1,169.
