Historical Description

FLOCKTON, an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1860 out of portions of the parishes of Kirkheaton and Thornhill, is a township, 3 miles south-west from Horbury railway station, 5 south from Dewsbury, 7 south-west-by-weat from Wakefield and nearly 7 east from Huddersfield, in the southern division of the Riding, lower division of Agbrigg wapentake, Wakefield union and county court district, rural deanery of Dewsbury, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon: the township is governed by a Local Board of Health of six members. The church of St. James, originally erected in 1697, was rebuilt in 1869, at a cost of about £4,000, and consists of chancel, nave and north aisle, with a bell turret containing 1 small bell: several of the windows are stained, and the interior is highly decorated. The register dates from the year 1700, but is in a defective condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £130, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Richard Carter esq. and held by the Rev. Charles Leonard Morland Hind B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. A Sunday school is held at the National school. Adjoining the churchyard are two almshouses for poor widows. G. Beaumont's charity, or the Darton dole, of £30 yearly, is for fuel and clothing for poor of the township. There is another charity of £30 yearly, known by the name of the Thornhill dole. There are Congregational, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and one for Christian Brethren. There are several collieries here and in the neighbourhood, chiefly worked by Messrs. Milnes, Stansfeld & Co. and affording coal of a very superior quality. Flockton Manor is the residence of Henry William Stansfeld esq. J.P. Wentworth Blackett Beaumont esq. M.P. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Henry William Stansfeld, Henry Savile and Charles R. Bond esqrs. The soil is loam; subsoil principally clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and turnips. The population of the township in 1871 was 1,116, and the area is 1,108 acres; the population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 1,942, and the area is 2,664 acres; rateable value, £3,451.
