Historical Description

FOLKTON is a civil parish and village, in a valley on the northern side of the Wolds, 5 miles west from Filey station, 3 north-west from Hunmanby station and 1 ½ south from Cayton station on the Scarborough, Bridlington and Hull section of the North Eastern railway, and 9 south-south-east from Scarborough, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Dickering, Scarborough union and county court district, rural deanery of Scarborough, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. John the Evangelist is an ancient edifice of stone, rebuilt at different periods, and consisting of chancel, nave, and a western tower containing 3 bells: on the north side of the nave is an ancient Norman doorway: the pillars and capitals of the chancel arch are Norman, but the arch itself is Early English, as is also the west end of the nave: the east window was erected in 1854 by the Rev. Herbert Phillips, a former rector, and in 1905 it was filled with stained glass in memory of the Rev. Henry Blane M.A. rector 1856 to 1889: there are fragments of ancient stained glass in the north window: the church was restored and reseated in 1894, the old gallery being removed at the same time and a richly carved oak pulpit, the work and gift of the late Miss Margaret Tate, lady of the manor of Folkton, was placed in the church: the nave was re-roofed and the chancel erected in 1906 by the Rev. J. F. Wilkinson M.A. rector 1890-1910: the chalice bears the arms of the Osbaldestons quartered with those of the see of Carlisle, and was the gift of Richard Osbaldeston, bishop of Carlisle 1747-62 and bishop of London 1762-64: there are 120 sittings The register dates from the year 1667. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £350, arising from 712 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Robert Osbaldeston-Mitford esq. and held since 1910 by the Rev. John Fisher Brown L.Th. of Durham University. There are small Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels at Flixton. The Clerk’s field, opposite the school on the south, was assigned at the inclosure of the common lands in lieu and satisfaction of and in full compensation for one sheaf of barley yearly received by the parish clerk for every oxgang of land in the common fields of Folkton; the field contains 1a. 2r. 12p. Miss Tate is lady of the manor, and Charles Dent esq. and the trustees of Thomas William Preston Rivis esq. of Norton, Malton (d. 1908), are the principal landowners. The soil is a mixture of chalk on the hills; on the carr, peat; subsoil, various. The township includes the hamlets of East and West Flotmanby, which consists of two farms, in the parish and township of Folkton, but which were formerly a village and chapelry. The parish, which includes Flixton, contains altogether 5,492 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £3,335; the population in 1911 was 407.

Public Elementary School (mixed), situated midway between Folkton & Flixton & erected in 1863, for 90 children; average attendance, 62.
