Historical Description

FORCETT is a parish, township and village, 4 miles south-west from Pierce Bridge station on the Barnard Castle and south Durham branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 north from Richmond, 9 south-east from Barnard Castle and 10 west from Darlington, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of West Gilling, union and county court district of Richmond, rural deanery of Richmond East, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Cuthbert is an old building of stone, in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 3 bells: there is a brass tablet erected in 1909 to the Mitchell family by Miss S. Mitchell: the church was thoroughly restored in 1859, and affords 344 sittings. The register dates from the year 1595. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £210, including 34 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Gilling, and held since 1904 by the Rev. William Whaley, of Hatfield Hall, Durham. The impropriate tithe amounts to £150. During the year 1904 the income of this living was augmented from various sources to the extent, of £30. The Shuttleworth charity here is of £5 yearly value. Here are large limestone quarries, supplying great quantities of stone to the iron works at and about Middlesbrough. There is a single line of rail from Forcett to Middlesbrough. Forcett Park, the property of Mrs. Charles Michell, lady of the manor and sole landowner in the township, is now occupied by Capt. Peregrine Maitland French; the mansion, a building of stone in the Italian style, is pleasantly situated in a park of about 200 acres, containing a lake of about 20 acres, well stocked with fish. The soil is loamy; subsoil, various. The chief crops are barley, wheat and turnips. The area of Forcett-with-Carkin township is 2,255 acres of land and 18 of water; rateable value, £2,816; the population in 1911 was 198, and of the ecclesiastical parish of Forcett, 693.

Gainford, co. Durham, is the nearest money order & telegraph office, about 1 mile distant.

Parts of Carlton and Cliffe townships are also in this parish.
