Historical Description

FOSTON is a parish, township and small village, seated in a beautiful vale, one mile north from Barton Hill station on the York, Whitby and Scarborough branch of the North Eastern railway, 12 north-north-east from York and 7 south-west from Malton, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, Malton union and county court district, petty sessional division of Bulmer East, rural deanery of Bulmer, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is a small but ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a turret containing 2 bells: the chancel was restored in 1886 and a stained east window inserted in memory of the first wife of the late Rev. F. Simpson M.A. rector 1855—1909: during the restoration of the chancel, a low-side window and an aumbry were discovered: there is also a good Norman doorway and an ancient font: the church was restored and enlarged by Mrs. Kelly-Holdsworth in memory of her husband, the late Col. Kelly-Holdsworth R.A.: there are 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1541. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400, including 280 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1909 by the Rev. William Henry Carr M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and prebendary of York. The children of the township attend the parochial school in the township of Thornton-le-Clay. The charities consist of rents derived from Willies Oxgang of about 4 acres at Flaxton; a capital sum invested in Consols which brings in about £3 annually, and several small benefactions. Sir Edmund Arthur Lechmere bart. of Rhydd Court, Worcestershire, Mrs. Kelly-Holdsworth, Messrs C. A. E. and E. S. Perfect, the trustees of York Blue Coat school and the rector are the landowners. Foston Hall, in a park of over 100 acres, is the residence of Mrs. Kelly-Holdsworth. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay on gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips and some land in pasture. The area of the township is 975 acres; rateable value, £2,074; the population in 1911 was 86 in the township, and 289 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary school, Thornton-le-Clay (mixed), erected in 1844, but since enlarged, for 80 children; average attendance, 50.
