Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
FRIARMERE is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1844. The church of St. Thomas, on the heights, and distant about 1 mile north, was erected in 1765, and is a plain stone structure, consisting of chancel and nave, with a wooden belfry and 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1766. The living is a vicarage, constituted under the Rochdale Vicarage Act, November 2nd, 1866, yearly value £200 with 40 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester and held by the Rev. Albert Workman Head-each M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. There are Congregational, Wesleyan and New Connexion Methodist chapels here. Fairs are held here April 24th. July 9th. and September 24th. A considerable business is carried on here in the manufacture of woollen cloths, Shawls, flannels, and felt for hats. The population in 1871 was 2,206; the area is 2,600 acres.
