Historical Description

FRIDAYTHORPE is a township, parish and village, on the road from York to Driffield and Bridlington, 2 ½ miles south from Burdale station and 3 from Fimber and Sledmere station on the Malton, Driffield and Thirsk section of the North Eastern railway, 9 north-east from Pocklington, 12 south-east from Malton, 18 east from York and 10 west from Driffield, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, Buckrose wapentake and petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Settrington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York, The parish is situated in the centre of the Wolds, in a fine agricultural district. The village stands high, and commands a view of the sea and Flamborough lighthouse. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a dwarf western tower containing 2 bells, one of which is inscribed, “Sancte Germane. Ora pro nobis,” and the tenor “I. H. S. Nazarenus Rex Judceorum”: a clock was given in 1902 by the late Charles Sellers esq. of York, who also left £100 to keep it in repair: the chancel retains its original piscina, and the font is also of ancient date and carved: the chancel arch and south doorway are Norman; the open oak roof was repaired by public subscription after the damage done to it by a gale in 1886: the church was restored in 1902 by Sir Tatton Sykes bart. under the direction of Mr. C. Hodgson Fowler, architect, of Durham, when an Early English arcade in the north wall was opened and as aisle built: the aisle is separated from the nave by a screen and is used for the Sunday school: in 1910 all the windows were filled with stained glass by Sir Tatton Sykes bart.: an oak lychgate was erected in 1908 as a memorial to the late Rev. Anthony Bathe M.A. vicar 1896-1906, at a cost of about £57: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1685. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £190, including 182 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1908 by the Rev. Walter Francis Turner B.A., L.Th. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1840, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1851. The interest on £1,000, left by Charles Sellers esq. of Amor Matris, York, in 1902, is distributed annually to 12 widows or other needy persons; and also the interest of £100, for providing prizes for the children attending the school here. The Oddfellows’ Lodge here has now (1913) 103 members. The Earl of Londesborough K.C.V.O. who is lord of the manor, and Mr, Robert Wharram are the chief landowners. The soil is chalky and light; the subsoil, chalk and flint. The principal crops are wheat, barley, oats, peas, tares and turnips. The area is 1,919 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £1,690; the population in 1911 was 252.
