Historical Description

WATER FULFORD is a parish, formerly known as Gate Fulford, but in 1895 the names were re-arranged by the County Council, the portion originally called Gate Fulford being now known as Water Fulford, and the part now known as New Fulford being included within the city of York. It is on the Toad from York to Selby, near the navigable Ouse, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Ouse and Derwent wapentake and petty sessional division, York union and county court district, rural deanery of York and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The old church of St. Oswald, standing near the river Ouse, is a small but ancient building, erected in 1349, for burials at the time of the Black Death, and now used as a chapel for the old churchyard: a lych gate was erected here in 1890 by Mrs. Fenwick, of Gate Fulford Hall, in memory of her husband, who died in 1883: the new church of St. Oswald, erected in 1866, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, and a western tower with lofty spire, containing a clock: there is a pulpit of marble: the church was partially destroyed by fire 13 Feb, 1877, but was restored in 1878 at a cost of £5,106, and affords 500 sittings. The registers date from the year 1650. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £180, including 23 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Thomas Edward Barlow Guy M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford, who resides within the boundary of the city of York. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1845, and rebuilt in 1896, at a cost of £1,000, is of red brick with stone dressings, and has sittings for 220. The York City Asylum, erected in 1906 at a total cost of £135,000, is a structure of red brick with stone dressings, and will hold 362 inmates: in the grounds is a chapel which the inmates attend. Between the village and York is a stone cross, said to have been erected to mark the spot where a temporary market was carried on daring the prevalence of the plague in the city of York. Fulford Hall, the residence of Capt. William Henry Key J.P. is pleasantly seated on the east bank of the river Ouse. Roman sepulchral remains were discovered in a gravel pit in 1813, and during the excavations for the York sewerage in 1892 a stone coffin was discovered buried in the road leading to St. Oswald’s old church. Capt. William Henry Key J.P. who is lord of the manor, Major E. W, Sandys R.A,, J.P. of Fulford House, and Lord Deramore, of Heslington, are chief landowners. The soil is loam and sandy; subsoil, gravelly. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and pasture. The area of Water Fulford is 1,465 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £8,092. In 1911 the population was 1,408, including 361 inmates and 58 officials and their families in York City Asylum.

By Local Government Board Order No. 31,643, the rural part of Gate Fulford civil parish was, in 1894, added to Water Fulford.
