Historical Description

FYLINGDALES is a civil parish, with a station half a mile north from Robin Hood’s Bay, on the Whitby and Scarborough branch of the North Eastern railway, and 5 ½ miles south from Whitby, in the Whitby division of the Riding, liberty and petty sessional division of Whitby strand, Whitby union and county court district, rural deanery of Whitby, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Stephen, erected by subscription, at a cost of about £6,000, and consecrated 3 Aug. 1870, is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a south-eastern tower with saddle-back roof, containing 8 bells: the church was restored at a cost of £2,400, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £254, including 52 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1859 by the Rev. Robert Jermyn Cooper M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, and surrogate, who resides at Fylingthorpe. A parish hall was erected in 1910 at a cost of over £1,000. The trustees of the late Sir Charles William Strickland 8th bart (d. 1909), are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are John Warren Barry esq. J.P. of Fyling Hall, William Farside esq. J.P. of Thorpe Hall, and the Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. The soil is various; subsoil, mostly clay. The chief crops are barley and oats. The area is 13,321 acres of land, 4 of tidal water and 364 of foreshore; rateable value, £10,263; the population in 1911 was 1,635.
