Historical Description
GANTON, or Galmeton, is a civil parish and village, on the road from Malton to Scarborough, with a station 1 mile north-west on the York and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway, 14 from Malton, 7 ½ by rail and 9 by road south-south-west from Scarborough, 8 west from Hunmanby, 35 north-east from York and 226 from London, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake of Dickering, petty sessional division of Buckrose, union and county court district of Scarborough, rural deanery of Scarborough, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south transept, north chapel, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with spire, containing 3 bells: a clock, added in 1897 in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of H.M. Queen Victoria: an oak screen was erected in 1904 as a memorial to the Rev. Henry Pearson Bainbridge M.A. vicar here 1873-1904: there are several memorial windows and mural tablets to the Legard family: the stained east window was presented by the late Sir T. D. Legard bart. and on the south side is a memorial window to Sir D’arcy Widdrington Legard bart. d. 12 April, 1866; the west window in the tower is also stained, and there are about 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1541, but there are earlier entries of an interesting character. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £156, including 257 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Harold Wrigley esq. and held since 1904 by the Rev. Arthur Crosbie Blunt B.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. The Golf Links, opened in 1893, are about 300 yards from the station. Ganton. Hall, the property and residence of Harold Wrigley esq. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, is a mansion picturesquely situated on rising ground behind the village, and surrounded by pleasure grounds and plantations. The soil in the wolds is chalk, on the lowlands sand, stiff clay and peat; subsoil, various. The crops are on the four-course system. The area is 3,973 acres of land, including the hamlet of Potter Brompton, and 7 of water; rateable value, £4,165; the population in 1911 was 398.
Public Elementary School (mixed), enlarged in 1887 & 1912, for 112 children; average attendance, 74. Attached to the school is a reading room & library, erected by the late F. A. Hamilton esq.; the library contains about 500 volumes.
