Historical Description

GARFORTH is a station on the Leeds and Selby branch of the North Eastern railway, township and parish (comprising Church, Moor, East and West Garforth), nearly 7 miles east from Leeds, and 9 miles north-west from Pontefract, and is a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, in the lower division of the wapentake of Skyrack, manor of Pontefract, union of Tadcaster, Pontefract county coart district, rural deanery of Wakefield, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Mary, originally a Perpendicular structure, was rebuilt in 1845, and is now a building in the Early English style, consisting of chance], nave, aisles, transepts, with tower surmounted by a spire and containing 3 bells; there is a clock in the gable of the north transept. The register dates from the year 1612; some of the very early entries are illegible, but the rest is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £514 with residence, in the gift of and held by the Rev. George Henry Whitaker M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have chapels. Col. F. C. T. Gascoigne, who is lord of the manor and proprietor of extensive colleries, and Lord Ashtown, are the chief landowners. The soil is heavy loam and clay; subsoil, principally limestone rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, and potatoes. The area is 1,753 acres; rateable value, £7,886 and the population in 1871 was 1,753.
