Historical Description

GARTON-ON-THE-WOLDS is a civil parish and village, on the road from York to Driffield, with a station 1 mile south from the village, on the Malton and Driffield branch of the North Eastern railway, 3 miles west-north-west from Driffield, 17 south-east from Malton and 190 from London, in the Buckrose division of the Riding. Dickering wapentake, Bainton Beacon petty sessional division, Driffield union and county court district, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, lofty nave, south porch and a massive western tower containing 3 bells: a fine oak screen divides the nave from the chancel, which has a reredos of alabaster richly carved and including a group of the” Crucifixion”; the frontal of the communion table, designed by C. E. Kempe esq. is a singularly fine example of English ecclesiastical embroidery; the chancel is fitted with elaborately carved choir stalls and desks: the walla Of the church are entirely covered with mural paintings, representing the “Creation,” the “Gospel Myeteries,” and other subjects, above a dado of mosaics and tile work four feet in height: the pavement is tesselated in various coloured stone, in the manner of the ancient “Opus Alexandrinum,” and the roof is decorated in gold and colour: the font, a new work, is of marble, and has a cover richly wrought with tabernacle work and many statuettes; the old font is now buried in the churchyard: there is a stone pulpit and all the windows are stained: the restoration of the church was begun in 1856, under the direction of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. and the decoration of the interior, which occupied the period from 1872 to 1880, was carried out at a total cost of about £8,000, defrayed by Sir Tatton Sykes bart, in 1899 the church was re-seated in oak, and now affords 200 sittings. In the churchyard is a modern cross of considerable proportions with a stepped base.

The register dates from the year 1512. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £128, including 67 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Charles Sidney Davis M.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. There is a Wesleyan chapel, rebuilt in 1895, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1871. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is principally light; subsoil, principally chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 4,146 acres; rateable value, £4,531; the population in 1911 was 414.
