Historical Description

The pleasant village of Giggleswick, which is said to have formerly been a market town, while Settle was only a hamlet, and it still contains the parish church to that place. This church is a large and handsome uniform building, exactly in the same style of the other churches in Craven, which are known to have been rebuilt in the reigns of Henry VII. and VIII. In this church, on a brass plate, in the middle aisle, is the following inscription: Here lies interred:

The Rev. William Paley, B.A.

Fifty-four years Master of this Free-School, Who died September 29, 1799, Aged 88 years.

Also Elizabeth, The Wife of the Rev. William Paley, Who died March 9th, 1796, Aged 83 years.

These were the parents of the late celebrated Dr. Paley, subdean of Lincoln, who is also lately deceased. This eminent person was born in July 1743, at Peterborough, where his father was then minor canon of the cathedral, but removed to Giggleswick soon after.

The parish of Giggleswick contains five townships, viz. the village of Giggleswick and Stackhouse one; the market town of Settle, with the hamlets of Lodge and Murbeck a second; the two Stainforths a third; the village of Langcliffe and hamlet of Winskill a fourth; and the village of Ruthmell a fifth.

The manors of Giggleswick and Settle are vested in his Grace the Duke of Devonshire, as Lord of the Percy-fee."The environs of Giggleswick are romantic and beautiful.—Here a deep and rocky valley begins to be formed, which allowing sufficient space for a very fertile tract of meadow and pasture, gradually expanding to the south, forms a bold and lofty rampart of grey limestone; on the east and west surmounted at a considerable distance, by the enormous masses of Pennygant and Ingleborough to the north. Immediately to the east, and almost overhanging the town of Settle, is Castleberg, a conical rock, backed by a cluster of rugged and protuberant craggs, and once undoubtedly crowned by a fortification."The summit of Castleberg once formed the gnomon of a rude, but magnificent, sundial, the shadow of which passing over some grey soft stone upon its side, marked the progress of time to the inhabitants of the town beneath. An instrument certainly more ancient in itself, and possibly as old in its application, as the dial of Ahaz."But the hour marks have long been removed, and few remember the history of their old benefactor, whose shadow now takes its daily tour unobservedly— In a quarry at Craven-Bank, the boundary of Craven, above Giggleswick, a large quantity of Roman coins were found some years since, chiefly of the two Constantines, Gratian, and others about the same period.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

GIGGLESWICK is a parish and village, the latter a mile north-west from settle and 16 miles north-west from Skipton, in the Northern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of West Staincliffe, western division of Stainclilfe and Ewcross wapentake, settle union and county court district. North Craven rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon, province of York, pleasantly situated on the river Ribble, which separates it from settle and is crossed by a bridge. The church of St. Alkald is an old stone building in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with south aisle, nave with aisles, and tower containing 6 bells dating from 1850, and a clock: there is a very handsome oak pulpit dated 1680 and a reading desk on which are carved the names of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, with this Inscription-“Here is the Standardes of the Israelites when the to Canan cam aganes the Canaanites”: the interior is partly surrounded with galleries: on the floor of the church are several brass inscriptions in an imperfect state. A stone cross stands near the church. The register dates from the year 1553 and is in very good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value 550, including about 30 acres of glebe, in the gift alternately of John C. Coulthurst and William Hartley esqrs. and held by the Rev. William Henry Coulthurst LL.B, of Magdalene College, Cambridge. In the seventh year of the reign of King Edward VI. a petition was made by the Rev, J. Rowell, vicar of the parish of Giggleswick, Henry Tennant esq. and other inhabitants of the town and parish of Giggleswick in Craven, to the King, for a Grammar school to be “erected and established, for the institution, erudition and instruction of children and young men,” and accordingly it was granted and ordained that from that time there should be a “Grammar school in Giggleswick, to be called the Free Grammar school of King Edward VI. of Giggleswick, and the same school for ever to continue of one schoolmaster or headmaster, and one under master or usher,” and it was ordained that eight men of the “discreeter and more honest inhabitants of the town and parish” should be appointed”governors,” and be called by that name: of these the vicar of the parish for the time being was to be one; they form, to use the language of the charter,” A Body Corporate and Politick for ever by the name of Governors of the Possessions, Revenues and Goods of the said Grammar School;” on the decease of any of the governors, or in case of any of them removing out of the parish, then they have power to “elect and nominate one other fit person into the place of him so dying or removing.” For the purpose of endowing the school, grants of church lands, tithes and cottages, situated at North Cave and elsewhere in Yorkshire were made to the governors: the yearly value of these was at that time given in at £23 3s. Power was vested in the governors to appoint the masters, and “with the advisement of the bishop of the diocese for the time being, to make fit and wholesome statutes and ordinances in writing, concerning and touching the governors aforesaid and their successors, how they shall behave and bear themselves in their office of governors and for what causes they may be removed;” also as “touching and concerning the manner and form of choosing and nominating the headmaster and under master; and also after what manner soever concerning and touching the ordering, government and direction of the chief master and under master, and of the scholars of the said school; and for fixing the stipends of the said masters and other things.” This charter bears date the 26th day of May, in the seventh year of the reign of Edward VI. (1553), and on the 2nd of August, in the year 1595 (seventh of Elizabeth), statutes were drawn up by the governors and approved by the Archbishop of York, the stipend of the headmaster being fixed at twenty marks, to be paid at twice in the year, viz. at the feast of St. Peter ad Vincula (August 1), £6 13s. 4d. and at the feast of the Purification (February 2), £6 13s. 4d.; the yearly stipend of the under master was £6 13s. 4d. to be also paid at the times above mentioned. On the 3rd of August, 1795, modern statutes, as they are called, were obtained; and on the 7th June, 1844, a new scheme was introduced, in which the revenues were stated to amount to £1,071 14s. 4d. Under an order of the Charity Commissioners, 1864, the Board of Governors has been augmented by the addition of ten “local ’’ to the eight “foundation governors;” these local governors are to be members of the Church of England and resident within the distance of thirty miles from the school house. Subsequently, in 1866 a further new scheme was obtained from the Endowed schools Commissioners. The Bishop of Ripon is visitor of the school: the governors have power to elect, and (under certain restrictions) dismiss the headmaster, to award to pupils scholarships tenable at, and exhibitions after leaving school, and generally to regulate the conduct of the school: the head and under masters are to be members of the Church of England and the former a graduate: the minimum salaries are £250 and £150 a year respectively: the under and all assistant masters being appointed by the headmaster. The available income amounts to about £1,000 a year and the school is open to all boys able to read and write, so far as the income of the charity allows, no fees being chargeable. The university advantages enjoyed by the school are: a preference to two scholarships of £50 a year each at Christ's College, Cambridge, founded by the Rev. J. Carr, formerly of Stackhouse; the right of sending two candidates yearly to compete for the two Lady Hastings’ exhibitions at Queen’s College, Oxford; and one exhibition from the Governors, of about £60, for natives of the parishes of Giggleswick and Clapham: a very useful and valuable library has been formed for the use of the masters and pupils of the school. The school house itself is admirably adapted for the purposes of instruction, having been rebuilt, and is well ventilated, perfectly dry, and situated in a retired and very romantic and interesting part of Craven. A hostel has been erected, entirely under the control of the Governors, to contain 140 boys with separate dormitories, and studies for the senior boys. The school is separated into senior and junior departments, great attention being paid to the modern languages and physical sciences. There is also a large dining hall, a sanitarium and field of three acres for cricket and football.

The following are the Giggleswick charities:—

Shute’s, of £38, to be divided amongst the deserving poor of Giggleswick on the day of the Purification of the Virgin Mary (February 2). Knowles’ charity, of 10s. a year, to such poor of settle, Long Preston and Wiggles worth respectively as are not receiving parochial relief. Foster’s charity, of £9 6s. 6d. and £5, for equal distribution amongst the poor of settle, Giggleswick, Stainforth. Rathmell and Langcliff. Atkinson’s charity, of £20, for the poor of settle. Clarke’s gift of £2 2s. yearly, for the purposes of Giggleswick and Rathmell alternately. Brown’s charity, being the interest of £20, to two poor housekeepers of Giggleswick not in receipt of parochial relief. Hargrave’s charity, arising from the rents of two acres of land, for teaching three poor children of Giggleswick and three of the township of Austwick, who may be nominated free scholars. Clapham’s charity, being the interest of £100 originally in the Navy £5 per Cents, to be distributed amongst such poor of the town of Giggleswick as are not receiving parochial relief. Lister’s charity, of £1 6s. to poor widows of Giggleswick. George Clarke, in the year 1716, devised the profits of five meadow closes in Rathmell, now thrown together and forming one meadow and one pasture, measuring about 13 acres and let for £22 a year, towards maintaining a schoolmaster in Rathmell. Stephen Carr, by will 1725, bequeathed the interest of £70 (amounting to £3 3s.), to be paid to the said schoolmaster, and also £10 to be applied to the repairs of the school.

About a mile on the north road from settle to Giggleswick, at the base of a lofty limestone ridge, called Giggleswick, scar, is an ebbing and flowing well: these movements occuring more or less frequently according to the supply of water, but the alternations are neither regular in intervals of time nor in the quantity of water, the depth added or flowing off sometimes nearly approaches to a foot, while at other times the change is little more than perceptible: it seems now to be ascertained almost beyond doubt that this phenomenon is caused by a double syphon with unequal basins in the scar above. Catteral Hall is the residence of William Hartley esq. and Beck house, of Miss Clayton. The Duke of Devonshire is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are William Hartley esq. James Procter esq. William Robinson esq. and John Birkbeck esq. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is limestone; it is chiefly pasture land. The population of the township in 1861 was 727; 1871, 874, and the area is 4,333 acres; rateable value £6,780; the area of the entire parish is 18,499 acres; the population in 1871 was 4,340.
