Historical Description

GILDERSOME is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1832 from the parish of Batley, with a station on the Great Northern railway, 5 miles south-west from Leeds and 5 north from Dewsbury, in the Eastern division of the Riding, wapentake of Morley, honor of Pontefract, Bramley union, Leeds county court district, rural deanery of Birstal, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The parish is governed by a Local Board of 12 members. The church of St. Peter, built in 1777, was rebuilt in 1876 at a cost of about £4,500, after its destruction by fire in 1873, and is a stone building, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches, and bell turret containing 1 bell. The register dates only from the year 1813, registrations previous to this date having been made at Batley. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Batley, and held by the Rev. Charles Henry Gibson B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. There is a cemetery of two acres in extent, managed by a Burial Board. The Baptist chapel, built by subscription, at a cost of about £3,000, was opened in May, 1866, and seats about 750 persons, with a school-room adjoining for about 150 scholars; there are also chapels for Primitive Methodists and Wesleyans, United Methodist Free Church and a meeting house for the society of Friends. The woollen manufacture is carried on; there are also scribbling and fulling mills and several collieries. The trustees of the late Earl of Cardigan are lords of the manor. Thomas and Matthew Stephenson esqrs. are the chief landowners. Soil, loam; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are grass, turnips and potatoes. The area is 993 acres; rateable value, £9,856; and the population in 1861 was 2,701; 1871, 3,448.
