Historical Description
GILLING, or East Grilling, is a township, parish and village, on the road from York to Helmsley, with a station on the Thirsk and Malton branch of the N. E. railway, which is also the junction of the line from Pickering through Helmsley, and is 5 miles south from Helmsley, 18 north from York and 8 ½ north from Easingwold, in the Whitby division of the Riding, Ryedale wapentake and petty sessional division, Helmsley union and county court district, rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of the Holy Cross, restored about 1854, and again in 1876, at a cost of £1,200, is an edifice of stone, in the Early English and Late Decorated styles, with some Perpendicular additions, consisting of chancel (which is higher than the nave), nave, aisles, south door, north porch, apparently rebuilt in the last century, and an embattled western tower with small pinnacles containing 3 bells: under an arch in the north wall of the chancel is a slab bearing a large floriated cross; the quatrefoiled head, deeply sunk, discloses the head and shoulders of a knight with his hands in prayer, and the trefoiled base similarly shows his feet; on the right side is his crest, a hind’s head, couped; and on the left his sword, partly concealed by a shield with the arms:-on a bend 3 birds, within a bordure engrailed: in the chancel floor is a brass to Robert Wellington, prebendary of Ulleskelfe, in York Minster, and rector of Bolton Percy and of this church, ob. Feb. 15, 1503: there are inscribed tablets in the chancel to the Rev. John Pigott M.A. rector of Gilling and Oswaldkirk, d. Aug. 15, 1812, and to the Rev. Thomas Young M.A. 23 years rector, d. Nov. 11, 1835: at the west end of the south aisle is an altar tomb, with the figure of a female in marble reclining on two urns, by Joseph Gott esq. of Rome, erected in memory of Thomas Fairfax esq. of Gilling Castle, d. Aug. 18, 1828, and Mary his wife: there is also a tablet here to Charles Gregory (Pigott) Fairfax, d. Dec. 29, 1845, and Mary Barbara his wife; and another at the east end of the aisle, erected by the late Mrs. Lavinia (Fairfax) Barnes, of Gilling Castle, to various members of the Fairfax family from 1570 to 1839; and near this stands a large altar tomb with recumbent effigies of a knight between his two wives; the knightly figure, placed on a raised stage, represents Sir Nicholas Fairfax, of Walton and Gilling, sheriff of Yorks in 1532, 1545 and 1561, who died in 1570; and the others, his wives Jane (Palmes) and Alice (Harrington): in the south wall of the aisle below a cusped and crocketed oge arch, adorned at either end with a shield of the arms of Etton, is a coffin slab bearing a floriated cross, the tomb of one of the Ettons, who were sometime lords of Gilling, but on the failure of male heirs the property, by an agreement made in 1349, descended to the Fairfaxes through the marriage, in the 14th century, of Thomas Fairfax with Elizabeth, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Yvon de Etton: there are two other coffin slabs in the church, one being only a fragment: in the same aisle is a tablet inscribed to Harriet (Fairfax), wife of Francis Cholmeley, of Brandsby Hall, d. Aug. 5, 1855; and to Francis Cholmeley, d. Aug. 17, 1860; the east window is a memorial to the Rev. William Maule Barnes M.A. who died at Naples, June 3, 1848; there is one in the north aisle to the Rev. James Alexander Barnes M. A. 33 years rector, d. Aug. 14, 1869, and two others, one of which was erected by the late Mrs. Barnes, of Gilling Castle, in memory of her parents, Charles Gregory (Pigott) Fairfax (above mentioned) and Mary (Goodricke) his wife;, she died Jan. 28, 1845: in 1886 a window was placed in the north aisle as a memorial of the late Mrs. Lavinia Barnes, who died Nov. 27, 1885: on the south side of the churchyard is an ancient stone cross, about six feet in height, discovered under the surface of the soil when the church was restored in 1876: on the north side, near the tower is a coped tomb with a circular shaft supporting a cross, erected to the Rev. J. A. Barnes M.A. late rector, d. 1869, where also his widow, Mrs. Lavinia Barnes, is buried: a memorial cross was erected in 1901 to Mrs. Janet Duff, sister of the Rev. J. A. Barnes M.A. late rector, and to George Ernest Garforth, her grandson: a new organ was provided in 1883: there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1573. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £506, including 4 ½ acres of glebe, with residence (the tithes of the out townships of Cawton and Grimstone are commuted), in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Louis Borissow M.A. of that college. There are two school endowments, producing £21 yearly, and also charities of about £11 5s. yearly value. Grilling Castle, the property and residence of William Slingsby Hunter esq. D.L., J.P. was anciently the seat of the Etton family, and subsequently, on the failure of that house in the reign of Henry VII. became the residence of their representatives, the Fairfaxes of Walton; the castle, beautifully situated on an elliptical and densely wooded hill on the west side of the village, is chiefly of the Tudor period, but the eastern portion is much earlier and includes a keep of the time of Edward II. and the basement retains a considerable amount of Decorated work: the west wing was built from designs by Sir John Vanbrugh: the Elizabethan dining-room is a noble apartment with carved wainscot, an ornamental ceiling and a frieze adorned with the emblazoned shields of the leading Yorkshire families in the year 1585; the flooring is of polished oak, and there are three beautiful stained windows displaying the arms of the Fairfax, Stapylton and other families: from the eastern terrace a very fine view is obtained across the valley; on the south side are terrace gardens beautifully laid out; the grounds and park cover an area of about 40 acres: the approach from the south lodge is thickly wooded for about 1 ½ miles and a stately avenue of beech frees (nearly a mile long) leads to the entrance. W. S. Hunter esq. is lord of the manor and owner of all the land. The soil is generally of a sandy nature; subsoil, clay; the high parts principally limestone. The chief crops grown are turnips, potatoes, seeds, oats and barley. The area of the township is 2,066 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £2,360; the population in 1911 was 208 in the township and 402 in the ecclesiastical parish of East Gilling.
