The Esk is here crossed by an ancient structure designated “The Beggar’s Bridge,” erected in 1619, and has the initials T.F. for Thomas Ferris, who is traditionally said to have been the builder. The church (dedication unknown), originally built in 1557, rebuilt in 1794, and restored in 1876—9, at a cost of £600, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting simply of nave and a western tower with pinnacles, the base of which forms the entrance: the windows are stained: the silver communion plate was presented by the corporation of the Trinity House, Hull, at a cost of £55, in memory of Alderman Ferries, a benefactor to the living: the alms dish, a facsimile of one in Westminster Abbey, was the gift of a late vicar, who also presented the pulpit: there are 260 sittings. The register dates from the year 1758. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £236, including 13 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1902 by the Rev. William Winning, of Trinity College, Dublin. The vicarage house was restored in 1878 at a cost of nearly £1,500. There are Wesleyan chapels at Great Fryup, Lealholm, Glaisdale and Glaisdale Head, and a Primitive Methodist chapel at Howlsyke. The Glaisdale Institute is a building of stone, erected in 1911 by the late Thomas Robinson, to commemorate the accession of H.M. King George V. Charities of between £5 and £6 are distributed annually at Christmas by the churchwardens to the indigent poor. Viscount Downe K.C.V.O., C.B., C.I.E. is lord of the manor. E. H. Davis esq. of Hartlepool, and Sir Francis Ley bart. of Epperstone, Notts, are the principal landowners.
