Historical Description

GOLCAR is a township and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1843 oat of the parish of Huddersfield, and is a widely scattered village, portions of which are very elevated and command an extensive view of the surrounding country; it is a station on the London and North Western railway (Leeds and Manchester section), 3 ½ miles south-west from Huddersfield, and is a polling place for the southern division of the Riding, in the union, petty sessional division and county court district of Huddersfield, upper division of the wapens take of Agbrigg, Huddersfield rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven, and diocese of Ripon. The river Colne separates it from the adjoining parish of Almondbury, and the Colne Valley canal passes through. A Local Board of Health of 12 members was established in 1861. The church of St. John is a modern stone structure in the Early English style, and consists of a chancel, nave and tower surmounted by a spire and containing 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1829. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the vicar of Huddersfield and held by the Rev. William Barker, of St. Bees. The Baptists have two chapels here, the Methodist New Connexion one at Wellhouse and one at Knowle bank, and the United Methodists have one at Ley Moor, in this township. The woollen manufacture, principally of fancy goods, is carried on here to a great extent. The Liberals and Conservatives have each a club. There are mineral spa baths in this township which are much frequented. The Trustees of the Savile estates are lords of the manor. Capt. Savile and Sir Joseph Perceval Radcliffe bart. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, stone. The land is in pasture. The township contains 1,593 acres of land; rateable value, £24,275—6; and the population in 1861 was 5,110; in 1871, 6,033.
