Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
GOMERSAL (GREAT and LITTLE) situated on the road from Bradford to Huddersfield, are adjoining villages, forming a township, and were in 1846 constituted an ecclesiastical parish by separation from that of Birstal, and are situated a mile west from Birstal railway station, 4 miles north-west from Dewsbury, and 6 south-by-east from Bradford, in the Eastern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Dewsbury, wapentake of Morley, Dewsbury union and county court district, rural deanery of Birstal, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The parish is governed by a Local Board of 12 members. The church of St. Mary, enlarged in 1865, at a cost of £1,000, is a stone building in the Pointed style, erected in 1851 at a cost of £3,000, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and tower. The register dates from the year 1851. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £180 with residence, in the alternate gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev. Robert Fetzer Taylor, jun. M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. There are chapels for Congregationalists, Wesleyans, Wesleyan Reformers, Primitive Methodists and Moravians; Sunday schools being held at the different places of worship. The Mechanics’ Institute, erected in 1851, at a cost of £1,800, contains a good library and is used occasionally for lectures and public meetings. The charities amount to £11 yearly value. There are several coal mines in the township. The principal trades carried on here are the manufactures of worsted yarn, blankets, cloth for the army and police, chemicals, machinery and iron founding. The land principally belongs to Mrs. Booth. Mrs. Hirst, Joshua Taylor, Messrs. Burnley, Trinity College, Cambridge, and Messrs. Broadbent. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area of the townships is 3,254 acres; rateable value, £39,886 3s. 6d. The population in 1861 was 11,230, and (1871) 12,880; the population of the ecclesiastical district in 1871 was 3,809. The hamlets are-Birkenshaw (which is an ecclesiastical district), Birkenshaw Bottams, Birstal Drub, Field Head, Latham, Moor Lane, Popeley Gate, Nutts and Spen.
