Historical Description

GOODMANHAM is a parish, township and village, 1 ¼ miles north-east from Market Weighton station on the York and Beverley section of the North Eastern railway, in the Howdenshire division; of the Riding, Holme Beacon division of Harthill wapentake. Holme Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Weighton, archdeaconry of East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints, standing in the centre of the village, is an ancient building of stone in the Early Norman style, and retains many interesting portions of the original structure: it consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a low embattled western tower, containing 3 bells: there are two fonts, one of the 16th century, with panelled plinth enriched with elegant tracery, and another of rude construction, belonging to the Early Norman period: the church was restored in 1894, the chancel in 1900, and the 13th century porch in 1904; there are 160 sittings. The register dates from the year 1678. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £517, including 732 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Katherine Stewart, of Pocklington, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Arthur George Braund M.A. of Downing College, Cambridge. The tithes were commuted at the inclosure in 1775 for 732 acres of land; there is also a com rent from Londesborough, worth £22 net yearly: an allotment of 25 acres in the township of Middleton, belonging to the rectory, was sold in 1882 and a gravel pit in 1905, and the money invested in London County Council Stock, producing £72 yearly, which is added to the living. There is a small Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1828, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, an iron building erected in 1890 and seating about 100 persons. A rifle range was acquired in 1898 at a cost of about £800, and furnished with 4 targets, for the use of the 5th Territorial Force Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. This place is of remote antiquity; and, according to Bede, was the site of the great English temple of Northumbria, remains of which existed when he wrote: in a field near the rectory are many irregular mounds of earth, called “Howe hills,” caused by quarrying chalk. During the excavation of the Rose Hill cutting, fragments of Roman pottery, pieces of Samian ware, an iron key, some remains of knives and shears and numerous beads and coins of Victorinus (A.D. 968) were found here. The Earl of Londesborough K.C.V.O. who is lord of the manor, the Rector, Robert Stainton Leighton esq. and Mrs G. N. Stephenson are the principal landowners. The soil is a flinty loam, resting upon chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 3,028 acres; rateable value, £3,565; the population in 1911 was 272.

Public Elementary School, erected in 1872, for 60 children; average attendance, 39.
