Historical Description

GOOLE is a seaport, market town, head of a union, polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1849 from the parish of Snaith. in the lower division of the wapentake of Osgoldcross, rural deanery of Snaith. archdeaconry and diocese of York; it is pleasantly situated on the river Ouse, which separates it from the East Riding, and is near the mouth of the river Don, or Dutch river as it is called, which flows from Snaith to this town, and is 25 ½ miles west-by-south from Hull, 27 by rail from Wakefield, 31 from Leeds, 24 from York, 17 from Doncaster, 18 from Pontefract, 56 from Sheffield, 38 from Barnsley, 26 from Bradford, 132 from Birmingham, 75 from Manchester, 105 from Liverpool and 187 from London: this town is the eastern terminus of the Wakefield, Pontefract and Goole branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, by which the town is brought Into rapid communication with the manufacturing towns of Lancashire and Yorkshire; it is also a station on the Hull and Doncaster branch of the North-Eastern railway. About 60 years ago Goole was only a small village, but it has now become a town and port of considerable importance, owing principally to the exertions of the Aire and Calder Navigation Trustees, who, in 1820, obtained an Act of Parliament for the construction of the Knottingley and Goole canal, which, with two spacious docks, was opened to the public 20th July, 1826, and in the following year the town was, by commission, constituted a port for foreign trade: this enterprise and the subsequent improvements in the navigation of the river, enabling vessels drawing from 17 to 18 feet to reach the docks at spring tides, have materially increased the trade, which consists chiefly in the exportation of coal, stone, the woollen manufactures of Barnsley, Bradford, Wakefield, Leeds; Huddersfield, Halifax, Dewsbury and Manchester, and the iron and cutlery wares of Birmingham and Sheffield: the imports consist principally of corn, fruit, butter, indigo, wool, logwood and timber, from Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and other countries.

The Ouse swing bridge, crossing the river near Hook and distant about a mile north from Goole, was erected for the Hull and Doncaster branch of the North-Eastern railway, and is worked by hydraulic power, the pumps being driven by steam: the total length of the bridge (including both the fixed and moveable portions) is 830 feet, the fixed portion consisting of five spans: the width is 31 feet, and the depth from the underside to the bed of the channel about 61 feet. The swinging portion consists of three wrought iron girders, 250 feet long, diminishing from 16 feet deep in the centre to 4 feet deep at the ends. The weight of the bridge is 670 tons, the force required for turning it being equal to about 10 tons. The engines, both steam and hydraulic, are in duplicate, and to enable the bridgeman to stop the turning movement at the right place, an indicator is provided, which acts by the motion of the bridge. For the purpose of ensuring safety in working the line over the bridge, a system of self-acting signals is arranged, by which the “all right” is shown only when the locking bolts are secure. The time required for opening and closing the bridge is 50 seconds.

The harbour consists of a basin 250 feet long and 200 wide, and is situated near the-confluence of the Dutch river, or Don, with the Ouse, here 500 feet wide, with which it communicates by means of two locks, one of which admits vessels of more than 300 tons burden: it also communicates by gates with the wet docks, consisting of the ship dock, 700 feet long and 200 feet wide, with a depth of 18 feet; the railway dock 600 feet long, and 200 feet wide, and containing 2a. 3r. 15p.; and the steam ship dock, with an area of 3a. 3r. 7p. opened in 1848; and with a dock for barges, 900 feet long and 150 wide, with a mean depth of 10 feet. The very fine lock connecting the steam ship dock with the river is 264 feet long and 58 feet wide, with 18 feet water over its sills, and has gates worked by hydraulic power; the various docks communicate with each other, the entrances being crossed by means of floating and other bridges: the barge dock has a communication with the Goole and Knottingley canal, over which there is a moveable iron bridge to allow of the passage of vessels with fixed masts. There is a large patent slip connected with the barge dock, for repairing vessels, and also a graving dock, 225 feet long and 58 feet wide, with 10 feet 9 inches water over sill: a stone quay wall has been erected towards the river: hydraulic power is extensively employed in connection with the docks, many cranes, a tip, and a new patent hoist, capable of lifting 75 tons, being worked by this power: the timber pond of E. Maude and sons is capable of floating 10,000 loads of timber: the quays are very commodious, with extensive ranges of fireproof warehouses for bonding merchandise of every description; yards for iron, slate, stone and timber; and every requisite for facilitating the business of the port.

The year ending December 31st, 1879, gives the following returns:-Number of vessels registered as belonging to this port, 353, tonnage 28,305; number engaged in the foreign trade, inwards, 825, tonnage 237,185; outwards, 812, tonnage 234,263; in the coasting trade, inwards, 1,097, tonnage 102,716; outwards, 1,119, tonnage 234,263. The amount of duties received at the Custom House was £21,300.

The Goole steam shipping Company Limited hare a fleet of ten large first-class screw steamers for the Continental trade and passengers; Mr. John Bennett hast three powerful screw steamers in the Boulogne and Ostend trade; the Humber Steam Shipping Company Limited have two first-class screw steamers in the Ghent and five, in the Jersey, trade; the Yorkshire Coal and steam ship Company Limited have five powerful screw steamers in the Hamburg and Rouen trade; Mr. William France has six screw steam vessels in the Goole and London trade; there is also the Goole and Hull steam Packet Company Limited, for daily passenger traffic; and the Goole and Hull steam Towing Company Limited have nine steam tugs which find ample employment.

The streets are well paved and lighted from the Aire and Calder Gas works. That portion of the town called Old Goole extends southward along the banks of the Ouse, and is separated from the new town by the Don, or Dutch river, over which is a wooden bridge; the houses are very irregularly built: several new streets have been formed, and gas works were erected in 1865. The chief portion is situated north of the docks, and consists of several regularly formed streets: the principal thoroughfare, Aire street, contains many well-built shops, and the Lowther and the Sydney hotels. East parade, facing the river, has some good private houses. The York City and County Bank, situated in Booth Ferry road, is one of the handsomest and most prominent buildings in the town, and is built in the Italian style, and was erected at a cost of £6,000, from the designs of Messrs. Atkinson and Demaine, of York. The Public Rooms are in Adam street. Near the barge dock are the iron foundries occupied by Thomas Scott and R. Cooper respectively, and on the canal side are the Goole Alum and smelting Works, and those of the Pure village and Cattle Food Company. There are also shipbuilding yards, sail lofts, roperies, and the timber yard of E. Maude and sons. The sailors’ Institute is in Bank’s terrace.

The Local Board of Health was established by a provisional order of the Local Government Board, in 1876, and consists of nine members. Meetings are held the first Tuesday in every month.

The church of St. John the Evangelist is a fine stone building, in the Perpendicular style, built by subscription, on a site given by the Aire and Calder Navigation Company, who also supplied a large part of the stone and other materials; the first stone was laid on the 28th of June, 1843. by the late T. H. S. Sotheron-Estcourt esq. who subscribed £500 towards the building fund: the church is cruciform in plan, and consists of chancel, nave, transept, with handsome tower and lofty spire, a clock and 1 bell, the gift of Mr. Sotheron-Estcourt, which cost £100: there are 1,000 sittings, more than half of these being free: it was consecrated in 1848.
