Historical Description

GREASBROUGH, near Wentworth Park, is a township, large village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1849 from the parish of Rotherham, in the southern division of the Riding, northern division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, Rotherham union and county court district, rural deanery of Wath. diocese and archdeaconry of York, 2 miles north from Rotherham, 7 north-east from Sheffield, 36 from Leeds and 172 from London: the township is governed by a local board of twelve members. The church of St. Mary, situated on the hill side, is a stone building in the Gothic style, with schools underneath, erected in 1828, in place of the old chapel of ease now converted into cottages, at a cost of £6,000, of which £2,000 was granted by Parliament, the remainder being given by Earl Fitzwilliam: the church is of the plainest description and consists of nave, with aisles and a good tower containing 1 bell and a clock: there is a gallery at the north end, and an excellent organ, built at a cost of £200, which, with the window at the south end, was given by the late Thomas Rhodes esq. who also left £500 towards lighting and other expenses: the church is well lighted with gas, heated by hot air, and has sittings for 800 persons, most of these being free and unappropriated. The register dates from the year 1747. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the patronage of Earl Fitzwilliam and held by the Rev. William Byers, of St. Bees. A school Board was formed on the 26th of July, 1876, consisting of five members, who are now (1880) building a school to hold about 150 infants, at a cost of £1,600 including the land, but sufficient space has been secured to enable them to provide for a mixed school at some future time. Here are chapels for Wesleyans (rebuilt in 1848), Methodist Free Church (erected in 1854) and Primitive Methodists (built in 1857): the Congregational chapel, erected by public subscription at a cost of £2,000, is an edifice of brick with stone facings in the Gothic style, situated in a very commanding position, and will seat 600: the foundation stone was laid by Mr. Frank Sellars, of Netber Haugh, on the 23rd of June, 1873. A chapel with schools, for the Primitive Methodists, on Potter Hill, opened Jan. 1881, is a red brick building with stone dressings, to seat 300, erected at a cost of £1,200. There are several charities for the poor amounting to £40 yearly. This was a Roman settlement. The land is chiefly the property of Earl Fitzwilliam, who is lord of the manor. The soil is heavy loam; subsoil, clay and mineral. The chief crops are corn and grass. The area of the ecclesiastical parish is 2,160 acres; rateable value, £13,944 2s. 4d.; and the population in 1871 was 2,281; the remainder of the population belong to St. John’s, Masbrough and Parkgate. The area of the township is 2,456 acres: population, 3,691.
