Historical Description

GREWELTHORPE is a township and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1848 from the parish of Kirkby Malzeard, a mile north from Kirkby Malzeard, 7 miles west from Ripon, and 3 south from Masham, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Ripon union and county court district, wapentake of Claro, rural deanery of Ripon, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. James is a stone edifice, erected in 1846, and comprises chancel, nave and north aisle. The register dates from the year 1846. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £129, in the gift of the vicar of Masham and Kirkby Malzeardand held by the Rev. William Henry Oxley M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford.

The chapel for Wesleyans was rebuilt in 1866. The charities are £23 7s. 6d. yearly value. There are several excellent stone quarries in the neighbourhood. The scenery surrounding is exceedingly picturesque; the sequestered and highly romantic spot known by the name of Hackfall, at the point where the river Ure approaches and begins to form the boundary of the West Riding, is much frequented in the summer months by tourists and parties from Ripon and Harrogate; its most admired feature consisting of two deep dingles, thickly wooded on either side, except where the naked scars contribute to vary and improve the view; “a small stream of clear water running through is obstructed in various places by a chain of rocks, and forms a succession of cascades half a mile in length, the largest of which falls 40 feet into the rapid stream of the river Ure, which boils, foams and thunders through the dingles.” The grounds, which are tastefully laid out and kept in excellent order, contain several ornamental buildings, among which are pavilions, artificial ruins, a grotto, a rustic temple and a small octagon room, called Fisher's Hall, built of petrifactions, and commanding most extensive and enchanting views. Mrs. Harcourt, of Swinton Park, is lady of the manor; and Mr. David Richmond, Mr. Durham, the Marquis of Ripon, Mr. Burrill, Mr. Fryer, Dr. Dalgleish, and the Rev. Dr. Gott, vicar of Leeds, are chief landowners. The soil is loam, with good beds of sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. Grewelthorpe is noted for cream cheese, large quantities of which are sent hence to the principal markets in England. The population in 1871 was 511; and the area is 4,521 acres; the population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 468; area 2,914 acres: rateable value, £4,285.

School, John Croome, master; Mrs. L. J. Croome, mistress.
