Historical Description

GRINDLETON is a township and ecclesiastical parish formed from the parish of Mitton, 3 miles north-east from Clitheroe and 14 south-west from settle, in the Northern division of the Riding, wapentake of Staincliffe and Ewcross, Clitheroe union and county court district, rural deanery of West Craven and Ripon diocese, situated on the river Ribble, which separates it from Lancashire. In 1845 sawley was attached, for ecclesiastical purposes, to Grindleton, but is, for civil purposes, a distinct parish. The church (name not known) is a plain modern building of stone, erected in 1805, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, and a low square tower with 1 bell, and contains a small organ. The registers date from the year 1744. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £110 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Mytton and held by the Rev. George Lancaster, of St. Bees. A Methodist Free Church was erected in the year 1862. Here are almshouses for eight widows, built and endowed by Miss Brown, of Rathmell, each person receiving a sum of 6s. weekly. The poor’s estate of 21 acres produce £45 yearly. The trustees of Colonel Towneley are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Miss Brown’s trustees, the trustees of the late Dr. Walshman and Messrs. Heaton and Waddington. The soil is generally good; subsoil, clay, stone, grit and limestone. The land is in pasture. The population in 1871 was 609, and the area is 3,777 acres; rateable value, £5,070; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 5,691 acres; population in 1871 was 820.

National school (mixed), Frederick stone, master; no school mistress. A Sunday school is also held here.
