Historical Description

GRINTON is a civil parish and small village, near the confluence of the rivers Swale and Arkle, 6 miles south of Redmire railway station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, 1 mile southeast from Reeth, 9 west from Richmond, 7 north-west from Leyburn and 16 south of Barnard Castle, in the Richomod division of the Riding, West Hang wapentake and petty sessional division, Reeth union, county court district of Richmond, rural deanery of Richmond West, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The parish extends west for several miles along the south bank of the river Swale. The church of st Andrew is an ancient edifice of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: there is an old copy of the New Testament chained to the original stand: the pulpit is also ancient, and the font has a carved canopy: the east window is stained, and exhibits a figure of St. George, with the words, in black letter, “Maria of Brydlington,” to which priory it formerly belonged: in 1895 the church was restored at a cost of about £3,000, and affords about 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1640. The living is a vicarage, held with that of Marrick, net yearly value £180, including 10 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1907 by the Rev. Bertrand Gregory L.th, of Durham University. The impropriate tithe amounts to £77. Col. Albany Hawke Charlesworth J.P. is lord of the manor. The other principal landowners are Ernest George Whitelock esq. J.P. of Cogden Hall, James Clarkson Winn esq. of Aysgarth, and J. W. Close esq. The soil is light; subsoil, stone and gravel. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 8,139 acres of land and 50 of water; rateable value, £4,957; the population in 1911 was 269 civil and 682 ecclesiastical.
