Historical Description
GROSMONT is a village on the river Esk, at the confluence of the Goathland beck, with a station on the York, Scarborough and Whitby branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 6 ½ miles south-west from Whitby; it is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1852 from Newbiggin hamlet and Egton township in Lythe parish, Eskdaleside township in Whitby parish and Goathland township in Pickering parish, and is in the Whitby division of the Riding, liberty and petty sessional division of Whitby-Strand, Whitby union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Whitby, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Matthew, erected in 1842, on a site given by Robert Carey Elwes esq. was rebuilt in 1875—84, in the Early English style, at a cost of £2,848, by Messrs. C. and T. Bagnall and the late Mrs. Clarke, of Hollins, Grosmont, and consecrated the same year; it is of stone, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and an incomplete tower: the reredos is a memorial to Charles Bagnall esq. of Sneaton Castle, M.P. for Whitby in 1865: the east window was removed from the former building: the font, discovered in a farmhouse near Julian Park, about 3 miles distant, is of Saxon or Early Norman date, and doubtless belonged to the priory or one of the chapels of this district: an old chair in the chancel bears the date 1632: there are 340 sittings. The register dates from the year 1851. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £240, including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1911 by the Rev. Arthur Albert slipper. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1890 at a cost of £600, and seating 90 persons. The Benedictine priory of St. Mary the Virgin was founded here about the year 1200, by Joanna Fossard or da Turnham, as a cell to the abbey of Grosmont or Grandemont in Normandy: at the Dissolution there were four monks, and revenues valued at £12: there are now no remains of importance, and a part of the site is occupied by a farm house, built out of the ruins at the west end of the priory church, which was existing in 1823; it was, however, only a small building, 60 feet long by 24 feet wide, but had three altars and 16 stalls of timber; south of it were miniature cloisters, 36 feet square, with sacristy and chapter house on the east, and dormitory over; refectory, kitchen and buttery on the south, with prior’s and other chambers above these, and a guest hall on the west side, besides numerous other buildings, the measurements of which are given in the suppression Papers of Hen. VIII. at the Pub. Record Office. The principal landowners are Arthur Gladstone esq. and Mr. Gutch, of York. The population in 1911 was 918.
