Historical Description

GUISELEY (or Guislet) is a township and parish and polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding and is a station on the Midland railway, 2 miles south from Otley, 9 north-west from Leeds, in the Upper division of Skyrack wapentake, Wharfedale union, Otley county court district, Otley rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry and Ripon diocese; it was formerly a market town and the market cross still remains. The township is governed by a Local Board of nine members. The church of St. Oswald is an ancient Norman edifice, consisting of a chancel, nave, aisles, transept, square embattled tower with 8 bells and a clock, and contains many ancient mural monuments. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, yearly value £1,100 with residence, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge (one turn) and G. L. Fox esq. (two turns in three) and held by the Rev. Edmund Thomas M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. There are places of worship for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. The Town Hall is a Gothic building of local sandstone, consisting of a board room, clerks’ office, fire engine-room, reading room, library, school-room, class-room and lavatory, all of which are heated by hot water; the cost, about £3,000, was chiefly defrayed by M. W. Thompson esq. of Parkgate, Guiseley. The Liberal Club, situated in Town street, was established in 1880. The staple trade consists in the manufacture of woollen cloths, principally tweeds, for which this place is famous. In the neighbourhood are several quarries of first-rate stone. The land is freehold. The soil is various; the subsoil is chiefly rock and sandstone. The chief crops are turnips with grass lands. The area of the township is 1,554 acres; the area of the parish is 8,926 acres; rateable value, £11,662; the population of the township in 1861 was 2,565; 1871, 3,185; entire population 16,876.

The Endowed school (mixed), was founded in 1622 by Robert Moor, & endowed by him with a yearly income of about £80: it was rebuilt in 1&76, at a cost of £1,800. Thomas Frizell, master; Miss M. E. Carter, mistress.
