Historical Description
HACKNESS-CUM-HARWOOD DALE is a parish in the Whitby division of the Riding, Whitby strand liberty, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe East, Scarborough union and county court district, rural deanery of Scarborough, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. Hackness is a village and township on the river Derwent, 3 miles west from Scalby station and 4 north-north-west from Forge Valley station on the Pickering and Seamer branch of the North Eastern railway and 6 west-north-west from Scarborough. The church of St. Mary, restored in 1870, is a building of stone, chiefly in the Norman and Early English styles, with some Perpendicular work, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with octagonal spire: the chancel arch, a good example of Early Norman work, is the oldest existing portion and the piers between the nave and south aisle are of the same period: the chancel is Early English, but has a Perpendicular east window and benches with misereres of the same date: the north nave arcade and the arch opening into the tower are Early English: the clerestory, gables and parapets and some of the buttresses are Perpendicular: the east window and four others are stained, and the font has a carved wooden canopy of Perpendicular date: in the chancel is a memorial to Sir Arthur Dakyns kt. ob. 1592, with seven shields of arms, some minutely quartered; it was erected by Sir Thomas Posthumous Hoby (knighted in Ireland 1593) and Margaret (Dakyns) his wife, 9 Oct. 1597, at which time they also repaired the church; here is also a later memorial, with a long inscription and shield of Hoby impaling Dakyns, to Dame Margaret Hoby, ob. 1613 in the north aisle is an inscription to the Lady Hilda, foundress of Whitby abbey, and preserved in the church are two fragments of ancient crosses found in the churchyard and apparently commemorating two daughters of Aldwulf, king of the East Angles (664—713), who were abbesses of the convent at Hackness, and other persons, contemporaries of St. Boniface (680—755); one of these, adorned with carved & scroll work, bears the mutilated inscription: -” A * SEPTEMBER * IE * AUENT * MEMORES * DOMVS * TVAE * MATER * AMANTISSIMAS; ' others have very ancient inscriptions of obscure character, similar to the Ogham inscriptions of Ireland: on the north side of the chancel is a monument by Chantrey to the wife of G. Johnstone esq. d. 1819: there are 250 sittings. The churchyard is well kept and has some fine trees. The register dates from the year 1567. The living is a vicarage united with the rectory of Harwood Dale, joint net yearly value £248, including 9 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Derwent, and held since 1856 by the Rev. Charles Johnstone M.A. of Durham University. The impropriate tithe amounts to £20. Here was anciently a convent of nuns founded by St. Hilda, abbess of Whitby, before 680, and dedicated to St. Mary and St. Peter: it was originally colonized from Whitby, but in 869 was plundered and destroyed by the Scandinavian invaders: in or about 1088, Serlo de Percy, the first prior of Whitby abbey, which had been refounded in 1074 by his brother William de Percy, established a Benedictine monastery here as a cell to Whitby, which continued till the Dissolution, when there were 4 monks: no remains now exist. There are some small charities. Hackness Hall, delightfully situated in the vale of Hackness, remarkable for its picturesque scenery, is the seat of Lord Derwent D.L., J.P. Capt. the Hon. The area of the township is 2,438 acres of land and 18 of water; rateable value, £1,574; the population in 1911 was 163 in the township and 593 in the ecclesiastical parish.
