Fixby History

FIXBY is a small township in the Northern division of the Riding, union, county court district and parish of Halifax, Morley wapentake, 2 miles north-west from Huddersfield and 5 south from Halifax. Stone and coal abound here. William Capel Clarke-Thornhill esq. is the chief landowner and lord of the manor. Fixby Hall, the seat of William Capel Clarke-Thornhill esq. now occupied by Joseph B. Tickle esq. is a handsome stone-built mansion and stands in the centre of a park of 150 acres; the grounds are beautifully laid out. The soil is strong clay; subsoil, rock and clay. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The area is 890 acres; rateable value, £2,564; and the population in 1871 was 469.
