Historical Description

HANDSWORTH is a township, parish and village, and polling place for the southern division of the Riding, in the Sheffield union, south division of the Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, Sheffield county court district, rural deanery of Rotherham, and archdeaconry and diocese of York, 1 ½ miles west from Woodhouse Junction station, 4 south-east from Sheffield, 169 ½ from London, 20 from Barnsley and 42 from Leeds. This is one of the parishes in Hallamshire. The Midland Railway runs through the borders of Woodhouse and has a station at Woodhouse Mill, and the Manchester, Shelfield and Lincolnshire line passes over the Midland railway and river Rother by a viaduct and has a station at Woodhouse Junction, The parish is governed by a Local Board of thirteen members. The church of St. Mary, standing on an elevation, is an ancient structure, containing portions of the original Early English church, and consisting of chancel, Perpendicular nave, with a roof of the year 1473, and an Early English tower containing 3 bells, dating from 1590: a spire was added in 1827, rising to a height of 140 feet: the interior of the church has undergone many alterations, and was restored in 1830: there are tombstones in the churchyard from 1640, and a brass to John Stacye of Baliefield, dated 1712. The register dates from the year 1558 and is in fairly good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £650 with house, in the gift of the Duke of Norfolk, and held by the Rev. James Mowat M.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. The charities for distribution amount to £20 yearly. There are many collieries and quarries in the parish. There is some malting here. Here are the nurseries of Messrs. Fisher, son and Sibray, occupying upwards of 300 acres. Woodthorpe Hall is the mansion of Richard Brown Greaves esq. The principal landowners are the Duke of Norfolk, who is lord of the manor, Mrs. Alderson, P. Cadman esq. Richard Brown Greaves esq. and the trustees of the late Mark Firth esq. but there are many small owners in the parish. The soil is loam; subsoil, yellow clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips &c. The parish contains 3,638 acres; rateable value, £15,088. Population in 1861 was 3,951; 1871, 5,783, distributed in the hamlets or constablewicks of Gleadless, Handsworth. Intake, Richmond, Woodhouse, Common side, Hurl field, Woodthorpe, Hollins End, &c.

A school Board has been formed & members elected, Dec. 11th 1890.
