East Keswick History
East Keswick is a township and village in the parish of Harewood, 3 miles east from Harewood, in the union of Wetherby, lower division of the wapentake of Skyrack, petty sessional division of Lower Skyrack, situated in a valley, 1 mile from Bardsey station. The church of St. Mary Magdalene, built in 1857 as a chapel of ease to the mother church of Harewood, is in the Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave and bell-turret with 2 bells; the Rev. Claude Alfred Lambert B.A. Trinity College, Cambridge, is curate in charge. There is a Church school for boys and girls, and a Wesleyan school. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. Dawson’s charity amounts to £32 yearly for distribution. The Earl of Harewood is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is various; subsoil, rock and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes. The area is 1,288 acres; rateable value, £2,395; population (1871) 437.
