Wigton History
Wigton is a township in the parish of Moor Allerton, and includes the hamlets of Alwoodlet Gate and Brandon, 7 miles south-east from Otley and 4 from Arthington station on the North Eastern railway, in Wetherby union, upper division of the wapentake of Skyrack, and petty sessional division of Upper Skyrack. Here is the site of a Roman encampment, where many stone coffins, ancient urns and coins have been discovered. The Earl of Harewood is lord of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, rock and limestone. The chief crops are oats, barley and turnips. The area is 1,294 acres; rateable value, £1,143; the population in 1871 was 138.
