Historical Description

HARTHILL with WOODALL is a parish and considerable village, a mile and a half from Kiveton Park station on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, 6 miles west from Worksop, 10 south-east from Rotherham and 10 ½ south-east-by-east from Sheffield, in the southern division of the Riding, Worksop union and county court district, Southern division of the Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, rural deanery of Rotherham, archdeaconry and diocese of York, and is bounded on the south by Derbyshire. The church of All Hallows is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and chapel, with a square tower containing 5 bells, dating from 1716; this church is the burial place of the Dukes of Leeds, whose mortuary chapel contains the remains of seven dukes and duchesses, as well as of other members of that family; one of the earliest inscriptions is that of Lord Edward Osborne, dated 1647, and there are several memorial windows: there are also monuments to Hugh Serleby esq. and his wife (1516), and a stained window in the tower to G. Walker, erected by his son, Horace Walker: the font is an Italian work of the 15th century. The register dates from the year 1586, and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £700 with residence and 80 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Duke of Leeds and held by the Rev. George Townshend Hudson M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. Here are Wesleyan and Congregational chapels. The Hewitt charity, producing about £3 10s. yearly, is distributed to the poor on St. Thomas’ day. Here are quarries of red and white sandstone and magnesian limestone. The Duke of Leeds is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The population in 1871 was 883; and the area is 3,565 acres, including the hamlet of Woodall; rateable value, £9,053 15s.
