Historical Description

HARTWITH with WINSLEY, situated on the northern bank of the river Nidd, is a township and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1861 from the parish of Kirkby Malzeard, in the parish of Kirkby Malzeard, Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of Claro wapentake, petty sessional division of Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge union, Ripon county court district, archdeaconry of Richmond, rural deanery and diocese of Ripon, and is 5 miles west of Ripley and 1 ½ miles from the Dacre Banks station, on the Nidd Valley branch of the North Eastern railway. The church, erected in 1751, is a stone building, consisting of chancel and nave with 1 bell, and was rebuilt and enlarged in 1830. The register dates from the year 1751. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £113, in the gift of the Rev. D. R. Roundell and S. Swire esq. and the Rev. G. M. Gorham, and held by the Rev. John Jackson Lucas, of St. Aidans. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists, and a penny bank at summer Bridge. There are charities of about £10 yearly value. Brimham Rocks in this neighbourhood are regarded as a remarkable natural curiosity. Sir Henry D. Ingilby is lord of the manor. Lord Grantley, Frederick Barnardiston Greenwood esq. Samuel Swire esq. and D. R. Roundell esq. are chief landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes. The area is 5,360 acres; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 4,806 acres; rateable value, £6,481 18s. 4d.; the population in 1861 was 1,227 and in 1871, 997.

Winsley is 4 ½ miles west from Ripley and, half a mile from Birstwith station.
