Historical Description
Hatfield, where Ceadwalla King of the Britons, with Penda King of Mercia, slew Edwin, the first Christian King of Northumberland, with his eldest son Offrid, in the year 933. Near the town are many entrenchments. William, the second son of Edward III. was born here.
Hatfield is a large and pleasant village, and contains several handsome houses inhabited by gentlemen of fortune, especially the mansion-house of Hatfield, now the residence of William Jessop, Esq. who married the heiress of that ancient family. The church is large, and has a lofty and elegant tower; it was probably originally built by the Saxons, but the present structure does not appear to be of a period anterior to that of Henry III.
Hatfield-Chace, the largest in England, comprising above 180,000 acres, one half of which was yearly overflowed, was by Charles I. sold to Col. Vermuiden, without the consent of the commissioners and tenants, to dischase, drain, and cultivate; which he at length effected at the expense of 400,000l. and drained above half. In the middle of Hatfield Waste lived an hermit, called William of Lindholme; his stud-bound cell was remaining in 1747, close to a well of clear spring water; at the east end of it stood an altar of hewn stone, and at the west end the hermit’s grave, covered with a stone slab, 81 ½ feet by three. Under this stone was found the skull, leg, and thigh bones, all of a very large size, and a small piece of beaten copper.
HATFIELD is a large and pleasant village and extensive parish, including the villages of Hatfield Woodhouse and Stainforth. 7 miles north-east from Doncaster, 3 south-west from Thorne, and 165 from London: it is a polling-place for the southern division of the Riding, in the southern division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, Thorne union and county court district, Doncaster rural deanery, York archdeaconry and diocese, situated near the navigable river Don and the canal which runs through the village of Stainforth on the Doncaster and Thorne turnpike road. The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway runs through the parish, and has a station, distant one mile from the village, at the junction with the West Riding and Grimsby railway; the North Eastern has also a junction here. The church of St. Lawrence is a large and fine cruciform structure consisting of chancel and chantry aisles, nave, aisles and transepts, and a lofty central tower containing a peal of 8 bells and a clock: the oldest parts of the church are Norman, but it is supposed that there was a church here in the seventh century: the principal part of the existing church is of Early Perpendicular work of the 13th century, the chantry aisles being about a century later: the length of the interior is 133 feet, and the breadth of the transepts 60 feet: a handsome oak screen, in tolerable condition, separates the chancel from the nave: a good stained window was placed at the east end of the church in memory of their father by the sons, of the late William Marsdin of Stainforth. and a small Norman window at the west end has been filled with stained glass by the architect, at the restoration: the large west window, a work of very fine character, was presented in accordance with the will of the late Mrs. Tait of Hatfield Woodhouse: the church, having been served for many years before the Reformation by the monks of Roche Abbey, had several altars, the chief altar and the chancel being consecrated to St. Mary, and the nave, used as the parish church, to St. Lawrence: the principal monuments in the church are of the 18th century and but of inferior interest: there is a flat stone inscribed in memory of Abraham de la Pryme F.R.S, antiquary, who died 1704: the most curious object of interest is a Peter’s pence chest, hewn out of a single log of oak, studded with nails and strongly banded with iron, with a slit for money in the top: a copy of Jewel’s Apology is also preserved in the church, chained to a desk: this church is not very rich, but its proportions are elegant, and its general treatment uniform: it was thoroughly restored in 1873. The parish registers date from 1566, and are written on parchment till the end of 1777; from that time they are on paper, and all are in a good state of preservation. The living is a vicarage, of the yearly value of £78, with residence and 48 acres of glebe land, in the gift of Captain Coventry, and is held by the Rev. George Philip Haydon M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The lay rector and impropriator is Henry Amelius Beauclerk Coventry esq.; the tithes and land are of the value of £3,000 a year. There are chapels for Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists, and Congregationalists. There are charities for the poor in the hands of the vicar and churchwardens amounting to £31 a year, and in the hands of the overseers to £8. Foster’s charily of £30 a year is held by trustees; and Porter’s charity of £20, for two old widows, is controlled by the churchwardens and overseers. The old manor-house, in which William de Hatfield, the second son of King Edward III. was born, is at present occupied by Mrs. Brockton. Park Lane Hall, the seat of George Wright esq. is pleasantly situated on the Doncaster and Thorne turnpike road. The Hon. Mrs. Meynell Ingram, lady of the manor, George Wright esq. William Hatfield de Rodes esq. Gilliott Hatfield esq. Henry Amelius Beauclerk Coventry esq. the Rev. Geo. Earle Welby, Thomas Turned esq. William Standring, the Rev. H. Hogarth and Samuel Machirt are the chief landowners. The soil is sand, gravel, clay and black peat; the subsoil is gravel and clay. The chief crops are turnips, potatoes, line or flax, barley, oats, and wheat. The area of the township is 14,293 acres; rateable value, £15,521; the area of the parish is 17,424 acres. The population of the township in 1871 was 1,795; and of the parish, 2,478.

Schools
Hatfield Travis Charity (mixed & infants); the building for the boys’ & girls’ school connected with this charity was elected in 1682 for a grammar school, in accordance with the will of John Spivey, dated Jan. 17th. 1619; but on account of the insufficiency of the endowment, the premises were, in 1877, transferred by the Charity Commissioners to the Governors of the charity & by them subsequently restored, at a cost of £400 &. re-established as at present: the infant school was erected in 1852 by the exertions of members of the family of Fox: the endowment for the purposes of these schools amounts to £80 yearly: Mr. T. Walker, master; infants’ school, Miss E. Church, mistress.

Black Bull Board, was erected, with master's house, in 1878, at a cost of £1,139, & is maintained by the two parishes of Hatfield & Thorne, the former paying the larger share of the expenses; Mr. John Wright & Mrs. Harriet Wright, master & mistress.
Stainforth School Board, built, with master’s house, in 1875, at a cost of £1,543: Mr. George Jenkinson & Mrs. Mary Matilda Jenkinson, master & mistress; infant school, Miss Alice Maria Hemmin.
