Historical Description

HAWES is a small market town, township and parish (formerly a parochial chapelry) on the south side of the river Ure, or Yore, in the vale of Wensleydale, with a joint Midland and North Eastern station on the Northallerton and Hawes 1 ranch of the North Eastern railway, connecting at Hawes Junction with the Leeds and Carlisle section of the Midland main line, about 16 miles west from Leyburn, 16 east of Sedbergh, 22 south-west from Richomod, 34 west from Northallerton and 255 from London; in the Richomod division of the Riding, Hang West wapentake and petty sessional division, parish and union of Aysgarth, county court district of Leyburn, rural deanery of West Catterick, archdeaconry of Richomod and diocese of Ripon. The town is lighted by electricity from the works of Mr. E. Chapman, and by gas supplied by a private company. The church of St. Margaret is a modern building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, vestry, north and south porches and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a peal of 8 tubular bells, hung in 1887, and a clock erected in 1859 at a cost of about £100: a new organ was provided in 1906 at a cost of £500: the church was restored at the sole cost of Mrs. Metcalfe, when a new brass lectern was provided: the stained east window cost £250: there is also a memorial window to Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe and his sister, Hannah Wood Metcalfe, besides others: the church affords 569 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 36 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Aysgarth, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Thomas Ernest Ellwood M.A. of Queen’s College, Cambridge. The tithe, amounting to £186, is the property of Trinity College, Cambridge, and lessees. There is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1843, and seating 300 persons, and a Wesleyan chapel is now (1913) being erected on the site of the old chapel, at an estimated cost of £2,000, to seat 300. The society of Friends has a meeting house. The public subscription library was established in 1788, and has about 2,000 volumes. The Conservative Club, opened in 1886, consists of reading room, billiard rooms and library, and now (1913) numbers about 250 members. The Liberal Club, established in 1885 and occupying premises opened in 1911, has a billiard room, reading and committee rooms and about 150 members. The market house, erected in 1901 at a cost of £2,000, is used as a public hall, for concerts, meetings &c.; attached is a small free library. A considerable market is held on Tuesday, this town being the principal market town and centre of business for the west part of the valley. Fairs are held on Whitsun-Tuesday, 28th September, and the first Tuesday in December for cattle; also fairs for lambs on the 30th of August and the 14th day of September; and a ram and sheep fair on the Tuesday after the 12th of October. Fortnightly fairs are also held during the spring of the year. Cheese fairs have been established here for the sale of the famed Wensleydale cheeses. There are two branch banks. Owing to its height above the sea and to the fact of its being surrounded by moors and hills, Hawes is now visited as a health resort. There are three good hotels and various boarding and lodging houses. The river Tore affords excellent trout and grayling fishing. There are several fine waterfalls in the neighbourhood, at one of which, the Hardrow Scar, a mile distant, the water descends from a height of about 100 feet. Atkinson’s charity of £200 invested in 2 ¾ Consols, is distributed by the vicar and churchwardens to the poor of over 60 years of age. The manorial rights are vested in the freeholders. The principal landowners are John Chaytor Metcalfe esq. of King Edward’s place, Wanborongh, Wilts, Mrs. Parker, of Bennington House, Stevenage, Herts, Oswald William Whaley esq. of Askrigg, Miss Wharton, of Bramham, John Christopher Cain Routh esq. of Rusthall, Kent, and Mr. Simon Hunter Willan. The soil is various, from a rich loam in the bottom of the valley to a poorer description towards the hill tops.

The land is entirely meadow and pasture. The area of the parish is 16,996 acres of land and 24 of water; rateable value, £13,117; the population in 1911 was 1,518.
