Historical Description
At Haworth, near Bawtry, an hospital was founded by Robert Moreton, for a chaplain and poor people, before the year 1316, which still exists under the patronage of the Archbishop of York.
HAWORTH is a township, picturesque village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1864 from the parish of Bradford, and “situated on the side of a pretty steep hill with a back ground of dun and purple moors,” adjoining the county of Lancaster on the west, and consisting in greater part of uncultivated heath and moorland, with a station on the Worth Valley branch of the Midland railway, 4 miles south from Keighley and 10 from Bradford; it is a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in Bradford wapentake and petty sessional division of Morley, honor of Pontefract, Keighley union and county court district, rural deanery of Bradford, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The river Worth and a small stream or beck sow on either side of the village, which is of ancient origin, and is formed by one principal street, and several smaller streets diverging from it. Part of the parish is governed by a Local Board of 12 members. The church of St. Michael, built at the summit of the long narrow street, and originally founded at the beginning of the fourteenth century, was wholly rebuilt in the reign of Henry VIII. and enlarged in 1755, and was pulled down and rebuilt in 1880; the new building was consecrated in February 1881; the only part of the old church remaining is the tower; the new building is in the Perpendicular style, and is built of local sandstone, and consists of double nave, with an embattled and pinnacled tower containing 6 bells and a clock with chimes: it is most probable that where Haworth church now stands there was once an ancient “field kirk” or oratory: it occupied the third or lowest class of ecclesiastical structures, according to the Saxon law, and had no right of sepulture, or administration of sacraments: the church contains neither brasses nor monuments, but on the eastern wall of the chancel is a memorial to the Rev. Patrick Bronte B.A. incumbent of Haworth for 41 years, and various members of his family, whose literary achievements have endowed Haworth with perhaps its highest claim to distinction, at least in modern times: the names recorded are those of Maria, wife of the Rev. P. Bronte (1821), and of his children, Maria Bronte (1825), Elizabeth Bronte (1825), Patrick Bramwell Bronte (1848), Emily Jane Bronte (Ellis Bell) (1848); Anne Bronte (Acton Bell) (1849): Charlotte (Bronte) wife of the Rev. A. B. Nicholas BA, (Currer Bell) (1855); and of the Rev. P. Bronte, who died June 7th. 1861, in the 85th year of his age: there are other memorials to the Rev. William Weightman, curate, Thomas Andrews esq. Surgeon of Haworth. and to the families of Taylor of Stanbury, Manley of Oldfield, and Greenwood of Wadsworth and Netherwood house: on the south side of the church is a curious Sun. dial inscribed, “Mr. Richard Pollard, of Stanbury, gave it to this church, 1726”: in an ancient chest, the lid of which once formed the communion table, are or were kept, two pewter flagons, each bearing an appropriate verse: these and other like inscriptions in the chinch have remained as memorials of its most honoured incumbent, the eccentric but truly apostolic William Grimshaw, who closed his eventful life, “in labours more abundant,” on the 7th of April, 1763, in the 21st year of his ministry, and the 55th of his age. The original register was destroyed and has been replaced by a copy dating from 1645, which is in excellent condition. The living is a rectory, with residence, yearly value £170, arising chiefly from land in the hamlet of Stanbury, in the gift of the vicar of Bradford and held by the Rev. John Wade M.A. Hertford College, Oxford, and surrogate. There are two chapels for Baptists and one for Wesleyans, with Sunday schools attached; the Primitive Methodists have also a chapel. The Conservatives have a Club house containing billiard and reading rooms, with about 120 members; Julien Judson, secretary. Here is a Mechanics’ Institute formed in 1844, consisting of reading and class rooms; it is well supplied with London and provincial papers, and has a library of 1,300 volumes. A Penny Savings Bank is open every Saturday from 6 to 7 p.m, at the Mechanics’ Institute. Ash Mount, the seat of Amos Ingham esq. is a handsome residence in the Elizabethan style, standing on an eminence and enjoying lovely and extensive views of the valleys and hills for many miles; the house is mainly of native stone with a portico of granite and stone, some portion of which is elaborately carved: the grounds contain many busts in stone representing various celebrated characters, including a striking group of our Lord and his disciples; in other parts they are varied with rock-work, and have, generally, a most picturesque appearance; within the mansion are some splendid specimens of ancient furniture and Bohemian glass; a stained window in the hall representing a waterfall, surrounded by a flowered border of most exquisite tints, deserves special notice. Fairs are held here on Easter Monday and the first Monday after Michaelmas. There are several extensive worsted mills. William Ferrand esq. who is lord of the manor, and Major-General Rawdon, of Rawdon Grange, near Leeds, are the chief landowners. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, stone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 3,454; of the township 5,966; the area comprising the ecclesiastical parish, is 3,871 acres, while the township is 8,174; and its rateable value, £17,821 18s. The remainder of the township includes Far and Near Oxenhope.
