Historical Description

HAYTON is a parish, township and village on the York, Market Weighton, Beverley and Hull road, and on a small rivulet half a mile west from Nunburnholme station on the York and Market Weighton and Beverley section of the North Eastern railway, 2 ½ miles south-east-by-south from Pocklington, 4 north-west from Market Weighton, 15 south-east from York and 14 north-west from Beverley, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Holme Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, Wilton Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Weighton, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Martin, placed on a slight eminence, is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 pre-Reformation bells: the aisle is separated from the nave by a Norman arcade, and the doorway of the south porch is a good example of Norman carving: the stained east window was erected in 1860 as a memorial to Sir Thomas Rudston bart. d. 1707, and Katharine (Mountayne). his wife, d. 1745, and there are 12 other stained windows: the church was restored and reseated in 1860, and has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1610. The living was constituted a vicarage in 1252, by Archbishop Walter de Grey, with the perpetual curacy of Bielby annexed, joint net yearly value £240, including tithes, together with 150 acres of glebe in the parish and 20 acres at Beeford, and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1905 by the Rev. John Graham B.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. The appropriate tithe, amounting to £326 yearly, belongs to the Dean of York. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1850. The poor of Hayton have 16 acres of land in Bielby and some small rent-charges, now in the hands of T. W. Calverley Rudston esq. and the vicar and churchwardens as trustees, and producing £22 yearly. Trevor Wheler Calverley-Rudston esq. of Allerthorpe Hall, is lord of the manor, and Henry E. Preston esq. of Middlethorpe Manor, Mrs. Lamb and the vicar are chief landowners. The soil is generally light; the subsoil is gravel and marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 1,898 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £2,462; the population in 1911 was 173 in the township and 404 in the parish.
