Historical Description
At Helagh, three miles north from Tadcaster, an hermitage in the wood or park, with liberty to clear the ground, was granted to Gilbert, a monk of Marmous lieu, by Bertram Haget, before the year 1202. A church was built and some religious placed here by his son, and about the year 1218, a priory of regular canons was established and endowed by Jordan de St. Maria, and Alice his wife, who was granddaughter to Bertram Haget. The monastery at the dissolution was granted to James Gage.
HEALAUGH is a parish and pleasant and picturesque village, 4 miles north from Tadcaster, in the Northern division of the Riding, Ainsty wapentake, Tadcaster union and county court district, Ainsty rural deanery, archdeaconry of York, and diocese of York. The parish being in York ainsty is included for parliamentary purposes in the North Riding. The church of St. John the Evangelist, built in the eleventh century, is a stone building in the Norman style, of which the doorway is a fine example; it was repaired in 1860, and stands on the edge of a Roman encampment, the remains of which may be clearly traced just outside the churchyard to the north-east: it consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, and tower containing clock and 3 bells, and contains an elegant and very perfect alabaster tomb with effigies of Sir Thomas Wharton and his two wives: Sir Thomas was Lord Warden of the Marches and defeated the scots at Sadom Moss 1542, for which he was created Baron Wharton of Wharton in the county of Westmorland: he died in 1568, The register dates from the year 1698, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £130 with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Edward H. Brooksbank and held by the Rev. Robert Herbert Cooke B.D. late fellow of Sidney College, Cambridge. This with other parishes enjoys a prescriptive right to Lord Whartons Charity of bibles and prayer books: Hudson’s Charity of £3 yearly is divided among the poor. The ancient manor house, now a farm-house in the occupation of Mr. J. Hutchinson, distant a mile south-west, occupies the site of the “Hermitage in the Wood,” converted into a priory of Black Canons in 1218, and established and endowed by Jordan de St. Maria and Alice his wife, and valued at the Dissolution at £72 10s. 7d.: it was granted to James Gage in 1549, afterwards passed to St. Arthur D’Arcy, and subsequently became the residence of Lord Wharton, it is now a farm-house of two stories, with an embattled parapet and square-headed windows of three lights each, and is surrounded by a moat, enclosing about three acres, within which is another farm-house, erected about fifty years ago, and now occupied by Mr. W. Jackson: these houses are distinguished by the names of East and West manors; in the gardens were lately found skeletons, some of which were perfect, justifying the belief that this was the burying place whilst it was a priory. Fragments of an Early English chapel are found built into the walls of the West Manor House. The Hall, the seat of the Rev. Edward Hawke Brooksbank J.P. who is lord of the manor and sole landowner, is situated in a handsome park, on the north bank of the river Wharfe, 3 miles south from the village and a mile from Tadcaster. The Old Hall, a pleasant mansion standing close to the church, is occupied by Edward Brooksbank esq. J.P. The soil is very variable; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and grass. The population in 1871, 233; and the area 2,661 acres; rateable value, £3,510.
School (mixed), supported by the Rev. E. H. Brooksbank, Miss Sarah Jane Gregg, mistress.
