Historical Description

HEBDEN BRIDGE is a large manufacturing village and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1844 from the parish of Halifax, a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, and a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, situated in a deep valley on the banks of the Calder, at its junction with the river Hebden; it is in the townships of Erringden, Heptonstall, Stansfield, Sowerby and Wadsworth. and is 8 miles west-north-west from Halifax, 4 east-north-east from Todmorden, 14 north-west from Huddersfield, 12 south from Keighley, and in the Todmorden union and county court district, rural deanery of Halifax, archdeaconry of Craven and Ripon diocese. The church of St. James, situate at Mytholm in Stansfield township and consecrated in 1833, is a stone building, consisting of nave, with chancel added in 1876, and a square embattled tower containing clock and 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1833. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £220, in the gift of the vicar of Halifax and held by the Rev. George Sowden M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. There are two Wesleyan and three Baptist chapels. Here are several cotton factories, a silk mill, two large corn mills, a saw mill, iron foundries, dye works, shuttle factory and public gas works; cotton twist, calicoes, satteens, fustians, ginghams and checks are the staple productions. Freestone of excellent-quality is quarried in the neighbourhood. Great facilities for the transit of goods are afforded by the railway and the Rochdale Canal. There is a Local Board consisting of 15 members, who have the supervision of a district comprising parts of the townships of Erringden, Heptonstall, Stansfield and Wadsworth. In the village is a Mechanics’ Institution, connected with which are a news room, library and savings bank. The neighbourhood presents many attractions: Horsald Scout, Rawtenstall wood, the Lumb valley, Cragg vale, and the Hebden valley, afford scenes of rare interest and beauty. At Crimsworth Dean, Nut Clough, Greenwood Lee Clough, Rawshaw Clough, near Walshaw, Grieve Water, and at Piper Fall, are some beautiful waterfalls, and about 3 miles from Hebden Bridge are Hardcastle Crags, a huge mass of rocks, which appear to have slid down at some remote period from the adjacent hill, forming an elevated ridge, from the top of which a fine view is obtained. The land is principally moorland and in pasture. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 3,666.

The National schools, erected by subscription, at a cost of £1,500, will hold 320 children, Richard Mellor, master; Mrs. Mellor, mistress.
