Historical Description

HECKMONDWIKE, on the road from Leeds to Huddersfield, is a township and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1842 from the parish of Birstal, and is a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, 2 miles north-west from Dewsbury, 9 south-west-by-south from Leeds, 9 east from Halifax, 7 north-east from Huddersfield, 7 south-east from Bradford, 35 from York and 186 from London, in Morley wapentake, Dewsbury union, county court district, petty sessional division, rural deanery of Birstal, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The Lancashire and Yorkshire railway has a station here. The Health of Towns Act was applied to this township in 1853, the sanitary board consisting of 12 members; the town is, in conjunction with Dewsbury and Batley, supplied with water from the waterworks at Dunford Bridge: it is lighted with gas from works at Millbridge, a hamlet of Liversedge, but immediately adjoining; the streets are clean and well paved. The church of St. James is a Gothic stone building, erected in 1831, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and a tower with spire. The register dates from the year 1831. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with good residence, in the gift of the vicar of Birstal and held by the Rev. George Mower Webb B.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There are three Congregational chapels, that in Upper George-street, with schools, was built in 1854, at a cost of upwards of £3,000, and will seat 800 persons; the Heckmondwike Congregational chapel was rebuilt at a cost of upwards of £2,000; and there is a third at Flush, erected in 1865. The Wesleyan chapel in Westgate was erected in 1865, at a cost of £3,000. The Reform Wesleyan chapel in Westgate cost £1,700, was built in 1851, and has sittings for about 500 persons. The Moravians have also a small chapel. The cemetery, comprising about six acres, with two mortuary chapels, was opened in 1860, and cost about £5,000. The principal public buildings are the Blanket Hall in Westgate, Freemasons’ Hall in Market street, used for public meetings, lectures and concerts, and the Cooperative Hall in Northgate. Wood’s charity of £3 yearly is expended in the distribution of bread. The chief manufacture of the place is blankets, but there are factories for the making of carpets, rugs, pilots and flushings, chemical works, machine works, two breweries and some coal mines. Two fairs are held for cattle; one on the first Monday in May, the other on the first Monday in November. The Duke of Leeds is lord of the manor, but the land is divided amongst various owners. The soil is clay, with subsoil of the same. The principal part is pasture; the chief grain crop is wheat. The population of the township and ecclesiastical parish in 1861 was 6,344; 1871, 8,300; the area is 697 acres; rateable value, £27,231.
