Historical Description

Heden or Headon, is situated on a river or creek, about half a mile from the Humber.

"Hedden hath been a fair haven town: it standeth a mile and more within the creke, that cometh out of Humbre into it. These crekes parting about the said town, did insulate, and shippis lay about the town, but now men come to it by three bridges, wher it is evident to se that some places wher the shippis lay be overgrown with flagges and reades, and the haven is very sorely decayid. Ther were thre paroche chirches in the time of mind, but now ther is but one of St. Augustine; but that is very faire. And not far from this church garth appere tokens of a pile or castel, that was sumtyme ther for the defence of the town. The town hath yet grete privileges; with a inair and bailies, but wher it had in Edward IIId’s days many good ships, and rich merchants, now there but a few botes, and no merchants of any estimation. Swarving and choaking of the haven, and fires defacing much of the town, hath been the decay of it. Sum say that the staple of wool of the north parts was once here. Truth is, that when Hull began to flourish, Hedden decayed. The Earl of Albermarle and Holderness was lord of Hedden: and had a great manor-place at Newton, a mile nearer the Humber. "

There is a painting of a king and a bishop in the church, and the same at Beverley.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HEDON is an ancient town, municipal borough, parish, polling place for the Holderness division of East Riding, head of a county court district and station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 ¼ miles east by road from Hull and 10 north-west from Patrington, in the middle division of the wapentake of Holderness, Middle Holderness petty sessional division, union of Sculcoates, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. A charter was granted to the burgesses of Hedon by Athelstan (925-40), and subsequently Baldwin (de Betun), Earl of Albemarle and Lord of Holderness, had free burgage here, by grant of King John in 1199; a charter was granted to the borough by Edward IV. but in 14 Jas. I. (1616-17), the corporate body was reconstituted by a new charter, which continued in force until the Corporation was remodelled under the “Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1859” (22 and 23 Vict. c. 35); the Corporation now consists of a mayor, three aldermen, nine councillors and burgesses. The town has a market place and is paved and lighted with gas from works near the railway station, erected in 1856 and belonging to a limited company. The borough sent two members to Parliament from 23 Edw. I. (1294-5) till 1832, when it was disfranchised by the Reform Act. There is a navigable haven, connected with the Humber, at the south end of the town, improved under a local Act, 1776, by which means a considerable amount of traffic is carried on in coal, lime and corn. The town is said to have once had four churches, St. Nicholas, St. John’s, St. James, and St. Augustine; but the last, which is the only one now remaining, was always the mother church of the parish. The church of St. Augustine is a magnificent cruciform structure in the Early English and later styles, with some remains of the Transition Norman period, the earliest portions dating from 1191, and consists of choir, transepts, clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, north porch, vestry and a central tower containing a dock, erected in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, chimes, and 6 bells: the choir and transepts, with the exception of the Perpendicular east window, are Early English, and have a triforium, serving as a clerestory, which is approached by staircases in the angles, and was originally continued round the east end, but both here and in the south transept it has been interrupted by the insertion of windows: the south side of the choir retains sedilia and two walled-up arches, formerly opening into a chantry; on the north side are three low arches; the transepts have tall gabled buttresses at the angles, and the doorway in the north transept exhibits a profusion of the dog-tooth ornament; the nave, built on the lines of an Early English nave, of which traces remain, is Decorated, and has windows with geometrical and reticulated tracery, and in the clerestory small windows of two lights; the west end is supported by massive buttresses, and has a fine doorway, and there are others in the aisles; the tower, a graceful work of the Perpendicular period, is 129 feet in height, with two tiers of large traceried windows, a light pierced parapet and eight crocketed pinnacles; on the floor of the choir is a mutilated effigy of the 14th century removed from the churchyard, and in the south transept a slab of dark stone or marble carved with a floriated cross; there are other stones with matrices of brasses and an ancient font of carved stone: in 1900 the east window was filled with stained glass by Mrs. Sarah Maria Procter, as a memorial to her father, Henry Cautley esq. Mary Ann, his wife, and to her late husband, and there are memorial windows to William Watson and Mary, his wife, and to the Colley family, besides two stained windows given by the late W. T. White esq.: the brass lectern was the gift of William Rawson esq. of Hull, and the church plate includes a silver flagon, given by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Iveson, of the Hollies, Gainsboro', in 1892: the south transept was new-roofed and restored in 1868, under the direction of G. E. Street esq. R.A.; the north transept and nave in 1871, the choir in 1876, and the tower more recently; the total cost, defrayed by subscription, being £7,000: the extreme length of the church is 164 feet 6 inches, and across the transepts 102 feet: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1549. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £201, with an acre of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Edward Herbert Montague Ainslie M.A. of Selwyn College, Cambridge. There is a Catholic chapel, dedicated to SS. Mary and Joseph, erected in 1804. and restored and redecorated in 1904; a Primitive Methodist chapel, with 100 sittings; a Wesleyan chapel, seating 250, erected in 1818 and rebuilt in 1875, and a Baptist chapel, built in 1801 to seat 200.

The Town Hall, in St. Augustine gate, was erected by Henry Guy esq. one of the parliamentary representatives of the borough for many years: it contains full-length portraits of Henry Guy esq. and William Pulteney esq. afterwards created (14th July, 1742) Baron Hedon and Earl of Bath; there is also a portrait of the late James Iveson esq. town clerk, presented to the Corporation by the late John Collins esq. of Danthorpe Hall, and one of the late William Kirk esq. five times mayor of Hedon. The Corporation possess a silver gilt mace 25 inches in length, of remarkable form, and probably the earliest civic mace now remaining in England, dating from the time of Henry VI.; the head bears three lions rampant between corded bands rising from a coronet, and it encircled by a cresting of roses and branches, above which four crocketed segments, meeting in the centre, form a crown; on the flat surface of the head are the royal arms-France and England quarterly-between the initials “O.E.” and crowned; the shaft has longitudinal cabled headings, and iron grip of six flanges. There is also a salver mace, 1 foot 6 inches long, of the time of Queen Elizabeth, with three fleurs-de-lis round the head, and on the top the royal arms, between the initials “E.R.”; the grip is similar to the preceding.

In the town are three dwelling houses or hospitals for three poor widows, and eight houses belonging to the Corporation, occupied by poor burgesses. A sum of £3 is yearly paid to the vicar by the trustees of the late Mrs. Watson, of Stoneferry, due on the 3rd day of August, for preaching a sermon on that day in St. Augustine’s church; also £1 6s. yearly for bread to be distributed every Sunday to the poor of the parish, and £2 12s. yearly is distributed in bread every Sunday, from Cockerill’s charity. Bethell’s charity of £2 10s. is distributed yearly to the poor by the Mayor, and Clifford’s charity of £5 yearly is assigned in equal proportions to the poor of Patrington and Hedon. A race course, situated between the Hedon main road and the North Eastern railway, was opened in 1888, and constructed at a cost (including purchasing the 267 acres of land) of £75,000: the one-mile course is dead level all the way, except a slight elevation at the starting point; there is also a 2-mile circular course with three stands; the meetings, however, are not now held. In the garden of Holyrood House here, now the residence of Mrs. Watson, is an ancient cross, removed in 1818 by the late Francis Constable esq. from Kilnsea to Burton Constable: it is said that this cross was originally erected at Ravenspurn, or Ravenser, near Kilnsea, to commemorate the landing at that place of the Duke of Lancaster, afterwards Henry IV. in 1399, and on it are sculptured emblems of Our Saviour and the Blessed Virgin. The Mayor and Corporation claim to be lords of the manor by virtue of the payment of a penalty of £30. The principal landowners are the Corporation, Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere. Henry Broadley Harrison-Broadley esq M.P. of Welton House. Col. William Lambert White V.D., D.L., J.P. Mrs. Watson and William Carleill Hall esq.
