Historical Description

HELPERTHORPE is a civil parish and village, 10 miles north-west of Driffield and 5 miles south-west of Weaverthorpe station on the York and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway, in the Buckrose wapentake and division of the Riding, and petty sessional division of Buckrose, Driffield union and county court district, rural deanery of Buckrose, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Peter, erected in 1875 on the site of the old church then removed, consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower with spire containing 3 bells: in 1893 a north aisle was added and the vestry enlarged and a chancel screen and reredos erected; the total cost, amounting to £10,900, was defrayed by Sir Tatton Sykes bart.: the roofs of the chancel and nave are highly illuminated with paintings, and the chancel retains stone sedilia and a piscina: all the windows are stained: the church was reseated in 1900 and affords 100 sittings. The Calvary cross erected by Sir Tatton Sykes bart. in the churchyard of Kirtham, was removed here in July, 1892. The register dates from the year 1754. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £190, with residence, in the gift of Sir Tatton Sykes bart. and held since 1901 by the Rev. Francis George Riley M.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Here is a small Wesleyan Methodist chapel, restored in 1899. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, who is lord of the manor, and Alfred John Cholmley esq. of Rillington, are the principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, principally chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips, The area of the parish is 2,593 acres; rateable value, £1,859; the population in 1911 was 156.
