Historical Description

Hemingsborough, once a market-town. The church is one of the handsomest in the county, and was made collegiate by the prior and monks of Durham in the year 1426, for a provost, three prebendaries, &c.

Hemingbrough is remarkable for its church, which has a beautiful spire rising forty-two yards above the battlements, and forming a very conspicuous object in this low and level country. This church is well built, having three aisles and a transept; and the stone is all of one kind, except in part of the north side, and west end, which are of a different sort of grit from the rest, and are supposed to be the remains of a Roman fort. Dr. Stukeley expressly says that the Romans had a fort in this place; and this appears more probable from its situation, being within little more than 100 yards of the whole course of the Ouse, which made here a remarkably zig-zag and circuitous winding, but now runs almost half a mile to the west of the village. At Babthorpe in this parish the ancient family of the Bapthorpes flourished during the space of many centuries.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HEMINGBROUGH is a township and parish on the road from Selby to Hull, and on the east bank of the river Ouse, half a mile south-east from Hemingbrough station on the Hull and Selby section of the North Eastern railway, 5 miles east from Selby and 5 north-west from Howden; it is in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, wapentake of Ouse and Derwent, Howdenshire petty sessional division, union and county court district of Howden, rural deanery of Escrick, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary, made collegiate in 1426 by the convent of St. Cuthbert, Durham, is a cruciform building of stone in the Norman, Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, with south aisle or chapel, transepts, with a chantry east of the northern arm, nave, south porch, vestry, and an embattled central tower with spire reaching a height of 191 feet, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel retains some screen work and its original stalls, with Early English misereres of much interest, and is separated from the chapel by an arcade of four arches; the transepts, originally Early English, were considerably altered in the Perpendicular period, when the fine north and south windows were inserted: the chantry chapel of St. Nicholas, on the east side of the north transept, has a stone altar and credence and a tomb with a cadaver; the south transept, opening into the chancel aisle, has some fine Early English windows, including a memorial to members of the Burton family: the north aisle retains carved woodwork of considerable age and excellence, and there is an ancient register chest; over the vestry on the north side is a room, reached by an external staircase of the 15th century: the exterior of the chancel is relieved by buttresses rising into richly crocked pinnacles, and has gargoyles of unusual size: the church was restored in 1885-6 at a cost of £2.000, under the direction of Ewan Christian esq. architect, and again in 1893 at a cost of £1,000, under the direction of Mr. Walter H. Brierly, architect, of York, and affords 650 sittings. The register dates from the year 1602. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £134, including 36 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1005 by the Rev. William Peter Wright M.A. of Trinity College. Oxford. The tithe arising from the township amounts to £295, and is impropriated. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. There are several landowners. The soil is warp and sand; the subsoil is sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, clover, turnips and potatoes. The area of the township is 1,123 acres of land, 17 of tidal water and 4 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,665: the population in 1911 was 513 in the township and 1,597 in the parish.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1878, at a cost of £2,000, & enlarged in 1906, for 150 children, including house for master; average attendance, 110.
