Historical Description

HEMSWORTH is a large well-built village and parish, on a pleasant acclivity, 7 miles north-east from Barnsley, 6 south-by-west from Pontefract: it is the head of a union in the southern di vision of the Riding, lower division of Staincross wapentake, honor, and county court district of Pontefract, York archdeaconry and diocese, and Pontefract rural deanery. The West Riding and Grimsby branch of the Great Northern railway company has a station half a mile north of the village. The church of St. Helen is a stone structure, chiefly Perpendicular, but with some fine decorated windows at the east end, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, a tower and 3 bells, two of which are of pre-Reformation date and supposed to be 470 years old, the third dating from 1726: the church contains some ancient monumental tablets to the Wrightson and Gargrave families: the building was restored in 1867, the aisles being enlarged and the nave renewed, a new pulpit erected and new stalls placed in the chancel. The register dates from the year 1685 and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £575, with residence and 200 acres of glebe, in the gift of W. B. Wrightson esq. and held by the Rev. Charles Edward Thomas M.A. of University College, Durham. Here are a highly endowed Hospital and Grammar school: the Hospital was founded by Robert Holgate, Archbishop of York in 1555, for one master in the holy order of priesthood and 20 brethren and sisters to be appointed by the rector, churchwardens and four of the most honest men parishioners of Hemsworth and the incumbents of south Kirkby, Wragby and Felkirk: the estates belonging to the Hospital, at Hemsworth. Malton and Huggate, comprise 2,076 acres of land, producing a rack yearly rental of £3,200: by direction of the Court of Chancery the trustees have erected a handsome range of buildings and a house for the master, about a mile and a half from the village, with the intention of increasing the number of brethren to 20 and of the sisters to 20 out of the increased funds of the charity: the master’s share is one-fifth of the revenue and the remaining four-fifths are now equally divided amongst the brethren and sisters: the alms people are selected from the poor parishioners from the above-named parishes, preference being given to those who have been reduced in their circumstances by misfortune: the former chapel in the old hospital buildings, with a dormitory on each side, has been made into a parish room by the rector and has a large lending library. The Grammar school was founded in 1546 by the same Archbishop Holgate, who is believed to have been born at Hemsworth: the school property is estimated at about £400 a year, in addition to which it is entitled to a yearly sum of £300 from the funds of the Hemsworth Hospital: a large and commodious house was erected in 1868 by order of the Court of Chancery, at a cost of about £4,000, which will hold from 20 to 30 boarders; 6 boys out of 6 neighbouring parishes have peculiar advantages here: the Rev. Charles stokes Butler M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford, is the headmaster. A Parochial school was built in 1868; this school is also connected with the Holgate charity. The Wesleyans and The Brethren have places of worship here. A reading-room for the Working-men of the village has been erected, at the sole expense of William Henry Leatham esq.; it is a handsome stone building, has a useful library, and is well supplied with newspapers. Here are several stone quarries of good quality for building, brick-yards and a steam corn-mill. A colliery has been opened by Mr. Richard Fosdick. Hemsworth Hall, the seat of William Henry Leatham esq. M.P., D.L. is a handsome mansion, standing on a rising-ground commanding views of the delightful scenery of the surrounding country; the mansion is surrounded lay lawns and pleasure-grounds, tastefully laid out: this house was the birthplace of the Right Hon. Sir Charles Wood, created Viscount Halifax, who continued to reside here with his father, Sir Francis Lindley Wood, bart. until 1830, when he removed to Hickleton Hall; it was afterwards purchased by the present occupier W. H. Leatham esq. M.P. and R. H. R. Rimington Wilson esq. are joint lords of the manor; the Latter owns Newstead Hall, a handsome stone mansion, approached by an avenue of elm trees; it is 2 ½ miles north-west from the village and is occupied by Henry Nevill Jackson esq. The chief landowners are the Hon. C. W. Fitzwilliam M.P. R. H.R. Rimington-Wilson, esq. Hanson Freeman esq. and W. H. Leatham esq. The soil is clayey, marly and sandy; subsoil, clay and limestone.
