The village is situated on the summit of a bleak hill. The parochial chapelry formerly comprised parts of Erringden, Langfield, Stanfield and Wadsworth. and the township extends to part of the village of Hebden Bridge. The ancient church of this parish was a building in the Early English style, erected towards the end of the twelfth century, and was dedicated to St. Thomas a Becket, the ruins of which are still standing. The present church of St. Thomas the Apostle is a handsome stone building, in the Perpendicular style, erected in 1854, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave with aisles, and a square tower containing 6 bells, dating from 1600, and a clock; the large east window was erected by public subscription, the west window by the Freemasons, and other windows in the chancel by Messrs. Eastwood and Foster and a former incumbent: there is also a small stained window over the chancel arch, two memorial windows in the south aisle and one in the north:-the organ was presented by Captain Sutcliffe, of The Lee. The register dates from the year 1593. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Halifax and held by the Rev. Edwin Palmer Powell, of St. Bees. There are chapels for Baptists, Wesleyans and Free Methodists. The poor have several small charities administered by trustees. Cotton spinning and manufacturing is carried on in the valleys.

Near this place is a romantic spot, called Hardcastle Craggs, much visited by tourists, on account of magnificent views of the surrounding country which it affords. Captain H. Savile is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Captain Savile, William Foster esq. of Heptonstall slack, Gamaliel Sutcliffe, of Stonesheygate and John Sutcliffe, of slack house. The soil is light; the subsoil is sandy. There is a great deal of moor and common land in the north-west of the township.
