Historical Description

HESLINGTON is a parish, township and pleasant village, on the eastern side of the vale of the Ouse, 2 miles east-south-east from York, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Ouse and Derwent wapentake and petty sessional division, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Escrick, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Paul, erected in 1858, on the site of an earlier structure, with money left by Yarburgh Yarburgh esq. is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower with lofty spire, containing 2 bells: all the windows are stained: the reredos and chancel floor are of the finest mosaic work and were the gift of the late Lord Deramore: there are 280 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £281, including 46 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Frederick Peel Mus. Bac. of Hertford College, Oxford. The rectorial tithe, amounting to £190, belongs to the Prebend of Ampleforth in York Cathedral. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. A hospital for eight poor men and one poor woman, of the age of 50 years or upwards, was founded here by Sir Thomas Hesketh knt. in 1608 and removed and rebuilt by Henry Yarburgh esq. in 1795. There are four almshouses for women, erected in 1903 by Lord Deramore as a memorial to his wife Lucy, who died in 1901. In 1854 many antiquities were dug up in a gravel pit near the village, among these being several gold rings and bracelets, two glass urns and two stone coffins, one of which was supposed to have contained the remains of a Danish prince. Heslington Hall, the property and residence of Lord Deramore D.L., J.P. and for a long period the seat of that family, is a mansion of red brick in the Elizabethan style: it contains many valuable paintings, and in the pleasure grounds are some ancient clipped yews of great size. Lord Deramore is lord of the manor and principal landowner. A court leet of the manor of Heslington is held (usually) in July, Capt. Henry W. Savile, of Methley Park, Leeds, is steward of the manor. The soil is partly gravel and sand; the subsoil is sand.

The crops are of the usual kind. The area is 2,643 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £4,375; the population in 1911 was 521.

By a Local Government Order, which came into operation March 25, 1884, the townships of Heslington St. Lawrence and Heslington St. Paul were amalgamated and to be designated Heslington, but the St. Lawrence portion is mostly within the city of York. See Lawrence street and Heslington road.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1856, by Mr. & Mrs. George Lloyd, as a memorial to the prorector, the late Yarburgh Yarburgh esq. & enlarged in 1907, for 150 children; average attendance, 100.
