Historical Description

HIGH HOYLAND is a parish and picturesque village, situated on a lofty eminence, 6 miles north-west-by-west from Barnsley, 7 north-east from Penistone and nearly 3 west from Darton railway station, 2 east from Clayton West station. The parish in divided into the townships of High Hotland and Clayton West, is in the Southern division of the Riding, union of Penistone, wapentake of Stincross, Barnsley county court district, rural deanery of Silkstone, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The church of All saints is a plain stone building of recent date, but already in bad condition, and consists of chancel, nave and tower, containing 6 bells: in the churchyard is a stone recording the death of Ann Copley, in 1707, at the age of 105 years. The register dates from the year 1650 and is in bad condition. The living is a discharged rectory, yearly value £455, in the gilt of W. B. Beaumont esq. M.P. and held by the Rev. Fitzgerald Thomas Wintour B.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. W. B. Beaumont esq. M.P. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is light loam; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The population of the township in 1871 was 239, and the area is 853 acres; rateable value, £1,089; the population of the parish in 1871 was 3,398; area 2,525 acres.
