Historical Description
HILSTON is a parish, township and small village near the German Ocean and 7 miles north-east from Ryehill station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 9 north-east from Hedon, in the Holderness division of the Riding, middle division of the Holderness wapentake, middle Holderness petty sessional division, Patrington union, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Margaret is a small building of rubble stone, in the Transition Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western tower with spire: it was rebuilt in 1862 by the late Sir Tatton Sykes bart. at a cost of £5,600: at the west end is a memorial window to Dame Ann Sykes, erected by six of her children: the east window is also stained: the font of white marble, with granite shafts, was given by the late Ven. Charles Maitland Long, archdeacon of the East Riding, in memory of Mary Anne (Foulis), wife of the late Sir Tatton Sykes bart. d. 1 Feb. 1861: there are 80 sittings. The register dates from the year 1651. The living is a rectory, united to that of Tunstall, in Holderness, May 11, 1877, joint net yearly value £190, including 68 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and Sir Tatton Sykes bart. alternately, and held since 1906 by the Rev. Joseph Henry Ainsworth, of St. Bees College, who resides at Tunstall. Major Walter George Raleigh Chichester-Constable J.P. of Burton Constable, is lord of the manor. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, A. Coster esq. and the Rev. Norman James Miller M.A. rector of Winestead, are the chief landowners. The soil and subsoil are clay, marl, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, clover, beans, oats, peas and turnips The acreage is 554; rateable value, £438; the population in 1911 was 32.
On Hilston Mount, an eminence near the village, is an octagonal tower of brick with circular turret, built in 1750, and surmounted by a flagstaff and vane: it is well known at sea as a landmark and is 50 feet high and 62 feet in circumference, and is known as Admiral Storr's Tower.
